Nobody here will eat any of it, and I have been giving it to our dog that is on a raw food diet. My mom used to cook liver and heart all the time growing up, and it still grosses me out 30 years later. She also cooked a cow tongue once, and I can still smell that to this day.....
Not sure why but while cleaning up a deer heart and liver the other day, I sliced a piece off. I seasoned some flour with salt and pepper and pan-fried it to about medium-rare. It was excellent. Anybody here routinely eat the heart and/or liver? I guess it supposed to be pretty good for you? |

I'm still blown away at how good the heart was! I told my buddy it was like the consistency of tenderloin, with tri-tip like flavor!
I'm not sure I will ever try the liver. I can still remember my mom making liver, onions and lima beans, and it was horrible!! I doused in ketchup and it was still terrible. |

Dogs ear the liver and heart. They love it. I don’t like deer liver. I have ground the heart into sausage meat.

Liver? Aww helll no. It tastes too much like the stink of a gut shot deer.

I think that the heart is one of, if not the best, parts of the deer.

I have a heart in the freezer but I think I'm the only one in my house willing to eat it. If have to lie to my family to get them to eat it.

My Uncle made deer liver once at deer camp when I was like 10years old. One bite and I almost threw up. Why the hell people eat such things is beyond me. the absolute best tasting part of the deer is staring you in the face and you choose guts? |

View Quote This... Ain't eating any entrails. |

Heart yes liver no. Heart tastes like the best prime beef cut I've ever had. Liver tastes like hot garbage with topping of cold poison.

The heart is always the first thing I eat.. other organs get a pass by me. My son will eat some of it but not much.

We always keep hearts. Sometimes thin sliced and fried with onions, sometimes ground. Anyone who doesn't keep the heart is wasteful IMO.
|
|
[#21]
I usually eat the heart the day I kill the deer, excepting heart shot deer, of course.

Eat the heart out of pretty much anything. Will eat livers out of some animals sometimes.

The heart is excellent meat. I do recommend against eating it if shot with non-bonded lead though.
Dogs get liver. I hope to never be hungry enough to eat "meat" that turns green when you cook it. I cooked up some lungs for the dogs (par-cook so they think its super special). Absolutely disgusting. As it cooked, frothy blood bubbled out. Smelled horrible. Dogs still loved it. |

A friend's grandfather would save and eat the heart, liver, kidneys and brains of deer we shot. He cooked eggs and deer brains one morning for us. We didn't know it till we were about half way through breakfast. He grew up during the depression and they ate everything they could from a deer they shot. I always thought they should be thrown out with rest of the gut pile.

Hearts yes, liver no. I don't care for liver in general. I do pan fry up fresh duck and goose liver though on occasion - it's good if not shot up.
Elk liver is supposed to be very good but I've never packed one out to find out. |

Heart, sure, but I don’t really consider it an organ, it’s just a muscle

Hearts get fried up or pickled... Yum!
Livers, if intact, get made into liverwurst... also YUM! Just gotta know how to handle, prep, and do it right. |

The heart is likely the best cut of meat from the whole deer.

Fried heart is delicious. Like Liverwurst, but never tried straight liver. Might bring it home to give to the dogs this season though

Somebody told me the liver was fine eating so I toted a ziplock bag for two years before I got an intact liver....
I have eaten the heart. It was ok but tough, it needs slow cooked. |
|
[#42]
Leave it for the coyotes, although I haven't shot a deer in ages
|

like others here I eat the heart. I do enjoy beef liver but have never tried deer.
One thing to remember is that most organs are high in cholesterol. You need to balance that diet if you are eating them regularly. |
|
[#44]
Absolutely not. I prefer to eat only the backstrap but do enjoy a good hind quarter stew.
|
|
[#45]
I’ve put hearts in sausage but give both to my dogs because they really like it. Can’t stomach the liver.
|
|
[#46]
The heart is delicious...and it's literally meat, so if you like venison, you'll like the heart.
I disagree that the heart is the best part though...backstrap and inner loin, cooked correctly, is better than heart and more plentiful. Liver, I've never been a fan of the liver of any animal. The Yotes get my deer livers. Yotes gotta eat too ya know. |
|
[#47]
As others have said, I eat the heart…… not a fan of liver in general so I don’t bother. I know it’s good for you but it’s just not my thing. I like to cube the heart up and make a stir fry with peppers, onions and mushrooms….. serve it over rice and it’s pretty delicious.
