Another cultural change that I have noticed after a fifteen-year absence from amateur radio, is the loss of terms which were common in "The Old Days". How did this change happen?

There was Phone (Mostly SSB) there was CW, and then there was "other" FSK, like RTTY and assorted oddball modes, Fax, Multi-channel CW and so on.

Before SSB there was AM, some FM some Phase Modulation and some I have probably forgotten.

Did all the new people just call it voice and ignore existing terminology, did all the people who called it phone die, what happened?

Just another thing which perplexes me about the current Language of Amateur Radio. We are our very own example of Linguistic Drift.

Technology changed and the FCC changed. "Voice" encompases digital audio transmisions.

Both is used around here. No real tie to age or anything either.

ARRL awards used to say "phone", but I have no idea what they say today.
