I was hesitant that my trusty 316 could get the plow deep enough and still have enough weight. But I didn't want to spend all night digging carrots by hand. Well, with the filled tires, a 70 pound on each fender, me on one fender and my son on the other, it went deep enough.
I was surprised by how it worked. It did a nice job of turning the carrots on their side (and covering them with dirt), but for the most part, the root tips stuck out in the furrow left so I could grab them good enough (for the Danvers anyway). We also tried some other kind of shallow carrot this year, one developed for clay soils, and those were just disappointing all around. Too stubby to be of much use, and the potato plow just buried them so I had to dig. Not doing those again.
Sorry no pics, as it was all done in pitch black darkness. Sure am happy with my LED light upgrade for the 316 though
Oh, what would have taken me about 4 hours to dig by hand (about 2 if they all pulled out nicely) took us about 10 minutes of "digging" and about 25 minutes of on my hands and knees in the dark deciphering if a clod of dirt (soil is very, very moist) was a mud covered carrot or just dirt. Not to mention, it was far easier than lifting them by hand. Gives me an idea for an idealized carrot digger attachment though...
