I started mine inside under a shop light. I first put the seeds on a damp paper towel inside a baggie and set in a warm place. They germinated by morning. Then placed in potting soil and they began sprouting in a couple days. Once they sprouted, they really took off.

I can't believe how fast these things grow. I just transplanted these the day before yesterday and they were not near this big. They didn't even have tendrils yet.

I need to get a trellis set up soon.

The cucumbers themselves blow up so fast, blink and they are too big to do much with.

1st pink eye peas came in. Gave them to my MIL. Starting to get excited. Went fridge shopping today for a 2nd unit, we will need it once festivities kick off.

Cukes are coming in hard. Still getting a few handfuls of beans a day. Tomatoes are starting to turn. Blueberries are just starting.

Japanese beetles are hitting the new grape vines hard. What the deer didnt eat the beetles are tearing up. Chickens cant come soon enough ..

My garden is doing so-so.  Tomatoes and peppers look like some of the worst I've ever raised, but the cucs are climbing the trellis and the zucs and squash are looking pretty fair.  First picking was last night, got a small zuc.  I took it in the house and gave it to the 3 1/2 year old and told him it came from one of the seeds he helped me plant and he was stoked.  I think he carried it around with him for 15 minutes.

Up picking peas, squash, cukes and tomatoes in the rain at 630 in the morning. At least 20lb of tomatoes.

You never know what is going to happen in a garden.  I was expecting poor performance from the squash and cukes,  so I planted extra. Now I am buried.

Peas, which are usually a sure bet, have struggled.

I am a little scared of my tomatoes since only 5 disease ridden plants have produced as much as they have. 24 plants are just about to start producing. My wife has already told me I am not allowed to bring 70lb of tomatoes into the house again

A question for the more experienced gardners

My green beans are coming to an end.  It's only July 2nd, can I squeeze in a second crop?

Will green beans survive in the heat and humidity of deep summer?

It's been an up and down summer so far, at the moment the garden is a mud bog

We need HEAT to make great tomatoes too

Probably, when is your first frost date?

Looking at a NC planting guide,  yes.

Have you considered peas? Black eyes, crowder, et al. I planted some crowder peas only a few weeks ago.

I have speckled butter beans in the ground

I've grown white acre peas in the past

When the squash dies off and the cukes go away I will plant more b beans and I hope more green beans

I'd like to make a couple of jars of pickled g beans

I'll also plant collards soon

Yep, I would bet a dollar green beans would make.

How do I tell when it is time to pick an eggplant?

A typical variety of eggplant is ok to pick when it gets the size of a softball or smaller really

Refrigeration is not recommended, so pick it and cook it

My small cramped garden.

Two rows of crowder peas. Three tomatoes in pots. One picklebush in a pot.

I'm really liking the Little Leaf cukes on the right trellis. The leaves are like half the size of a regular cuke plant.

Tomato worms attacked one of the plants last night. Need some seven dust.

Put up 2 quarts of peas, 2 quarts of tomatoes and made a half gallon of spaghetti sauce. Made 2 squash casseroles for the freezer.

Didn't step foot in the garden.

Fresh is not slimy or bitter.  Old, store bought may be slimy and bitter because of the time between picking and purchase

It's very firm and it really has no taste.  It takes on the taste of what it's cooked in

I have another that's almost ready, we will have EP Parm later in the week

Give it a try, it's easy to grow

Just the wife and I here so I jugs did some containers of tomatoes and peppers this year.

I’ll bulk buy from farms and can.

Cherry tomatoes and jalapeños are coming on nicely.  Should get hit hard in the next few weeks. Big tomatoes are looking very good.

I planted a short variety as well and probably pulled them sooner than I should, those were the most amazing roast carrots I have ever had.  Totally changed the way I look at and think about carrots. I have gone from putting them in to make a kid happy to planting a fairly large plot this fall.

Trying to scare the deer. Thought about filling them with tannerite.

I move them about every 2 days and spray them with cheap women’s spray.

Also using it as justification for a 37mm launcher and bird bombs

Dang how do y'all get weedless gardens like that?  We tried to kill the grass with tarps for a couple months before tilling this new spot, but anywhere we haven't mulched is like thick sod, and we can only pull/hoe weeds so close to the plants before we chop them down.

How long does that take you?  I think I need to watch some YouTube on how to hoe.  I feel it takes me a half hour+ for a row and there’s still a lot of weeds I can’t get to without Damaging the plants.  Difficult to weed near them when they are young because they are so fragile.  Then when they’re old they’re still fragile.  I’ve got to be doing something wrong.    Wish someone would have showed me when I was a kid.

About a hour. It sucks but I use it as part of my exercise.

I try and do 2-3miles a day and close my exercise ring on my watch. On days I hoe it’s all I do.

And there is some hand weeding involved.

I actually use a tool that have 4 metal fingers and not a actual hoe. It’s liter and easier to break ground with and just uproot the weed.
