Spent a lot of years on smaller rivers namely the Powell and Clinch in Tennessee.

I’d like to get back to it but don’t have a boat right now. We always used Jon boats growing up but I’m wondering if one of the newer composite boats might not work better. Thinking it might be more steady and take rock hits better than aluminum but I’m wondering if there aren’t some downsides I’m overlooking.

Model I’m considering is like this
Sun dolphin water tender

this looked neat too.   But I'm a canoe guy.  In before the kayak klan comes in and tells you yak or go home.

Dammit, I'm too late! Kayaks are a lot of fun but aren't for everybody. With that said, I would probably just do a jon boat and customize it as you see fit.

I'd pass. Stay with an aluminum boat. "Plastic" boats become brittle over time especially out here in the desert

and start cracking. They are also heavy foot for foot compared to aluminum.

An aluminum boat will be around long after a plastic has rotted into the ground.

I love my kayaks, but I would LOVE a little aluminum Jon for fishing.  Can't get my Chaparral into places I would want to take a Jon boat.
