I am getting my son ( 12 years old ) a Ruger American Compact for a starter rifle for deer season this fall. I am looking for a 3-9X40 scope and would like to keep the cost at around, or under $200. I have been looking online at Leupold VX-Freedom, Vortex Crossfire II, Burris Fullfield II, Redfield Revolution and Bushnell Trophy.

I see there are still some Nikons out there, but heard they are getting out of the scope business, so I am not sure what that would do to customer support, so I will steer clear of those. The Burris I am shying away from because I do not care for the one piece power adjustment eye piece ( makes using a Butler Creek flip up cap impossible )

It has been a long time since I bought a hunting scope and I know technology has come a long way. I did have a Vortex Crossfire 4-12 on an AR last year and sold it off as I was not impressed with the glass.

That kind of leaves me at the Leupold and Redfield, with the Bushnell a distant third.

What says the hive?

Lack of the warranty from Nikon wouldn't scare me off a scope in this case, personally.

That said, my only suggestions would be to avoid fancy reticles like mil-dot, BDC, etc so that when it is go-time and buck fever is on it is simple to aim. Also, an easy to grip and turn power-adjustment ring would be a good feature too for smaller hands.

I know many folks use a 3-9 but is that power needed for the kind of hunting the kid will be doing?

Not sure if is still made but I have got great service with the Leupoild 2-7 rifleman series. Light ,compact and super sharp and clear. About $200

You would be the best judge so I will leave the power decision to you.

I am a huge fan of .243 , great choice for small to medium sized hunters (and not a bad choice for full sized hunters !)

I'm a really BIG fan of using the best optics you can.  I'd much rather have a $500 optic on a $200 rifle than stick a cheap optic on an expensive rifle.  You cannot cleanly take deer if you cannot see them, and cheap optics often 'fail' in low light.  You can see your deer with the naked eye, but in the twilight the cheap scope is too 'dark" to use....

Its not on your list.  However, I'd recommend looking really seriously at the Weaver GrandSlam 2-8x.    Currently on sale at Natchez.

Priced at $259.  I've got one of these and its a very very good scope for the dollar.  It's not a Swarovski or a Kahles.  However, even at $350 or so its very competitive with scopes in the $400, 500 range.  At $259 its an absolute steal.  I'd rate it as on par with a Leupold VX2 quality wise....

As a bonus, its not a heavy scope. It will be well balanced on that 243, and will not make for a top heavy combination.

I had thought about a fixed 6X for the K.I.S.S. factor, but could not find one anywhere I looked.

I ended up putting a Leupold VX Freedom 2-7X33 on it. Good fit and works great. We took it out yesterday and got him on paper and dialed in. He put 5 of 6 rounds on an 8 inch gong at 200 yards, the miss was the first shot, so I feel pretty good about everything.

Thanks for the input guys.

The Leupold Freedom scopes are a great value and a 2-7 power scope is great for deer hunting.

I think any of those would be a good choice, I had a Trophy back in the day and it was a great scope for the money, had it sitting on a 222.

All three of my sons started hunting with the same 243 rifle.
Originally had a bushnell trophy for about 12 years. Upgraded to a Vortex Diamondback 4-12.
Much nicer scope and a good warranty

I have a rem 700 in .243 with a vortex crossfire II on it and its never failed me. I guess it is all in the users preference.

Should be a winning combo, the little guy will love it!

I see you already went 2-7. I would have suggested going with a 4 to 12 or 16.

My first rifle was a 700 BDL in 243. The 243 is such a flat shooting varmint killing machine, I put a 4 to 12 Redfield on it so I could hunt deer at 50 yards and groundhogs at 250. It has shot a good number of both over the last 30 years. That old Redfield is still going strong but more importantly, I still like the 4 to 12 range.

Put a Leopold on one kid’s .243 and a vortex on the other. Both are decent.  I have a Nikon on my .270. It hasn’t given me any problems either.

Sightron scopes are a great value.

I'm not a big Leupold fan but they do well for hunting applications.  Good luck to you and your son, OP!

I got my son a Remington model 7 in 243 Winchester a while back and I put a Leupold VX2 2-7x32 on it.  I think it was a little over $200 with free shipping (I think $229) from Natchez.
It's small enough to match the size of the rifle and it has enough power to reach out to 200 yards without any issue.
It's been a great scope for my son.

I have Zeiss 3x9-40mm Conquest (Discountinued) model on both of my kids .243's, which you can find on ebay for around $400.  The field of view and clarity is better than all Leoupold scopes in the VX1 - VX3 series.
