Kaibab National Forest on the North Rim is great for primitive camping and exploring. Remember it’s at 8000+ elevation, so it could be snowy or extremely cold if you are planning early Spring. Make sure the Jacob Lake Road will be open.

The whole area would be more of the destination than that exact particular spot.

Post Covid the parks are all crowded, so expect people inside the National Park and in accessible areas along the Jacob Lake road.

If you have a decent 4x4 you’ll have plenty of places to camp by yourself.

We will be going at the end of May beginning of June so hopefully the road will be open.

we will be taking a Chevy Colorado 4X4 hopefully that will handle anything we need it to do.

If it gets too dry they’ll ban campfires in certain forests.   Its a bummer.

When april comes around maybe post again. Cheers

yep we will be doing primitive camping. we have been searching camping places on freeroam.com and the boon dockers bible.

I retired last month from driving semi after 44 years and want to go see some places I was only able to drive by and never stop.

Wife am I are both early 60's and want to do this while we still can enjoy it, hopefully it wont be more than we can handle.

As mentioned… its more a state of mind than one particular spot in the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in North America.   Its all about the journey,     Road beers and all that.

Bring crabmeat

That spot is kind of separate from the largest contiguous Ponderosa forest on account of a certain famous ditch forming a barrier.

Turning off at the road for the House Rock Valley Bison Herd and driving down the eastern edge of the Kaibab Plateau will shave off a lot of time if you're in any rush. There are some ranches back there, so the road is decently maintained. The Kaibab can get a little crazy if the weather's anything near decent. I like heading further west into the Strip- Uinkaret Plateau or further- to really get away from folks. The AZ Strip has something for everyone.

We are leaving Wisconsin on June 1 and plan on hitting Arches National Park in Moab UT on Monday the 5th and then heading to the Saddle Mountain overlook for a few days or more.
Hopefully by getting there mid week we will be able to get a decent camping spot.
