| Yesterday a neighbor called me saying a old pickup drove down the dead end street that stops at my property, a kid with a backpack and hatchet jumped out, and he hoped the fence into my back yard. My suspicions were that he was going after my trail cameras, which I have in metal security boxes, and cable locked to a tree with a 5/16 cable. I got out there this afternoon to look and sure enough the chopped through the cables and stole both cameras and security boxes. About $300 worth of gear. The security boxes can be lag bolted to a tree, I will be doing that with the next batch and going back to manner of placing cameras by using a ladder and putting them higher up in a tree. |

So is this a bunch of malicious kids, pillheads or junkies, or is there something on your property they want to get to?
Are they swiping the cams for quick cash at a pawn shop?? Or did they realize they were photoed doing something wrong and swiped the cams to cover their ass? Can ya set up a "bait cam"? some lookalike that's cheap and cover it with a well hidden camera? Maybe load it with Purple Rain Powder That stuff will turn everything it touches purple when in contact with moisture. And it just keep on giving.. 
Lets see who has purple hands, door handles, sides of vehicle.. they will leave a mark. I hate thieves... set a harmless but colorful trap for the bastards. Let the cops in on what yer doing.. Good Luck! |

I have a description of the vehicle, a gray S10, with license plate starting with 413, and the back window is busted out and replaced with cardboard and duct tape. Law enforcement has already been made aware of this but even if they find the vehicle nothing will happen other than maybe they talk to driver who will deny being there and then say he picked up a hitch hiking kid that asked to be dropped off there. That is on me for not pulling the cards more often. The bridge cameras I had pulled last November and they were working. Since putting cameras up down there I've only caught 3 instances of people back there over the last year. There isn't that much traffic back there. The purpose of the cameras is to be a deterrent to anyone going back there. Unless I'm getting real time feeds, not possible until I run electricity down there, the images I get off the camera will be old. I just want trespassers and criminals to know they are being caught on camera so that they will go somewhere else. |

Update on stolen cameras
I got a little bit of good news. The officer found the truck, questioned the occupants, and informed them it is possible that the truck could be seized since it was used in a commission of a crime. They are supposed to be getting back to the officer with the name of the suspect. Meanwhile the officer also found a pair of cameras, matching exactly what I had stolen, at a pawn shop and were logged into the books 3 1/2 hours after I received the call of the hatchet man in my yard. Unfortunately I did not record the serial numbers so it might not be possible to get them back. I described the memory card that was in them (which I'm sure was tossed), model numbers of the cameras, and the camera switch settings for controlling what type of video or picture to take. Hopefully the driver of the truck provides a name and that is connected to who pawned them, then that should be enough to get the cameras back. |

I already replaced the cameras. One is have securely mounted and the other I put a lot higher up a tree so they wouldn't be easy to get.
Here is how security box is bolted to the tree. Attached File This is the fully secured box. The thick cable is what I had on it before and they were able to cut through it one or two blows from a hatchet. I still put that on it because it does secure the camera inside the box. The circular lock is one that they can't pry and smack open. It holds the two pieces of the security box together as well. Even with all that the camera can still be stolen, it just won't happen quickly or quietly. Attached File |

At some point I hope enough people know that I have cameras everywhere, the neighbors look out for each other, and our Chief of Police is tough. The chief came to our town maybe 5 years ago and has been working to make our city PD a premier police department across the state. He's doing a pretty good job. The officer that responded to this situation has been awesome and very quick to respond.
If I get the cameras back I will offer to take the neighbor out to dinner. I might do that even if I don't get them back. That neighbor is actually the same one that I helped out last summer. The video I posted, here or another thread, of two guys stealing car batteries and cutting through my back yard. They were his batteries that were stolen. |

Turns out the cameras that were pawned on the same day I received the call were not my cameras. However, the officer on the case got busy and a detective had his schedule open up and he took on my case. He brought the pawned cameras to me to see if I could identify them. He also did some digging and the owner of the pickup truck pawned a camera like mine a couple days prior. He said he was going to run to the next town over to get the camera from that pawn shop and see if that is mine. The working theory now is the driver/owner of the truck possible stole one camera earlier and then dropped a buddy off a couple days later to get the second one. The second camera's cable was definitely cut with a hatchet. Either way the own of the truck is looking at charges since he was the driver in the commission of a crime. Apparently the guy is fairly new to the area and has already racked up multiple encounters with law enforcement. He picked the wrong town. |

And that they are even following up on this is amazing. Here, they would do their best, but they've got bigger fish to fry than something like that, and it's not because they don't care. That's just awesome. |

I got one camera and security box back! The guy who owned the truck the when the hatchet man hoped out had pawned it a couple days prior using his real name. The pawn shop gave him $5 for the camera and the security box combo. The other camera and the hatchet man will most likely never be found. The truck owner isn't talking and no other pawn shop reports a Primos camera being pawned. I will continue to setup additional cameras and work to get a way to have real time monitoring. |

Especially after a long, gray GRAY winter. My yard is all wigged out. The hyacinths ALWAYS bloom before the daffodils. This year the hyacinths are up but not budded to bloom, and the daffodils bloomed last week. Now they're mush.

The daffodils in the back yard have been growing for awhile but have not put any flowers out yet. I have tulips coming up everywhere that I have previously planted them. Hopefully we have a nicer spring this year and they will produce decent flowers.
I just tapped 4 maple trees and 1 walnut tree to see about getting sap from them. I don't see any trees leaking sap from the yellow bellied sapsuckers yet, so hopefully I'm timing it right. Last fall I picked up tomatoes and peppers that grew in the juglone soil. I just planted a 36 cell tray with pepper seeds and a 36 cell tray with tomato seeds. I'm not sure what germination rate I will get or if any of the seeds will sprout. But I'm giving it a shot to see happens. I also saved seeds from a yellow daisy. No matter what I try I cannot get them to germinate. I have the seed trays in the house so the constant temperature should be 72 degrees. I've put one tray directly on the heat register to see if that will help. Out of the 500 seeds or so that I've planted I might have 1 plant. One thing germinated in a tray of 300 seeds, it is too soon tell which plant it is. |

The yellow flower that grows on the property is variety of Rudbeckia. From what I could find there are close to 50 varieties. One website shows what the seeds look like. That puts the closest match as either "Rudbeckia maxima" aka Great Coneflower or "Rudbeckia laciniata" Wild Golden Glow. Since the flowers grow in the shade my seeds could be smaller due to that or it is another variety.
I still have had near zero luck getting the seeds to germinate. From what I have been reading the seeds are not supposed to be covered with dirt, just pressed into the surface and exposed to light to germinate. I've done that and got nothing. I also buried them at multiple depths and nothing. I've kept them in a humidity dome and I've left them open but got nothing. I have two containers that something sprouted in but I didn't label it so I don't know. Looking at seedlings for Rudbeckia they look similar. There was one batch of seeds that I put through a cold stratify process. These might be those seeds. Researching more I found that it is recommended to cold stratify Rudbeckia seeds or at least scarify and soak them before planting. The process is supposed to be done for 30 days but the batch I did was only in the refrigerator about 5 days. I collected another 2 1/2 gallons of maple sap today. Giving me 5 1/2 gallons. I started boiling it off around 4pm and finished at 10pm. I figured out why both years prior to this year the maple syrup did not turn out right. As I was cooking it down it seems like the syrup was near done so I stuck my go to digital thermometer in it. Below 200 degrees so I let it continue. After 10 minutes the temp still hadn't changed. I got a second thermometer and stuck in it. The temp was 220 degrees and within a minute it hit 230. The syrup was done a few minutes prior and was over cooking. I just ran a temperature test on the two thermometers. I boiled a pot of water and stuck the probes in. The second thermometer is a dual prob, so that you can monitor meat temperature and the smoker air temperature. I put both probes in. The second thermometer is reading 214 and 214. My "go to" thermometer is reading 179. There is no telling how long I've been over cooking things. The final product. Right at 1 pint. That is close the 40 to 1 ratio. Finally made a little bit of progress on the yard. I finally knocked off something from my March to-do list from 2018! I have the trellises put in place for my blackberries. I also spent the weekend clearing out one of the over grown gardens. This is what it looked like before, pretty much all the trees and brush on the left half are what have taken over the garden. April 2019 Update
A better picture of the brick patio that I found under 2 inches was organic matter that came from the walnut trees. You can see the steps are covered in material as well. That isn't even a year of material. I found the brick pavers when I was trying to clear the area to add the concrete table. Unfortunately there was no base material put under the pavers and many have sunk. The entire thing will have be taken up and redone. Attached File Next we have my orchard area. It will be in the bottom across the creek. There was a large Box Elder and a fairly open space under it. I cut that tree down and will be clearing the rest of the brush from the area. The sides of the area have Maple trees but most trees behind it are Walnut. So my orchard may be dead in a year. Where the tree fell is where the fruit trees will be going. The area is really shaded even with creating a clearing, so I'm not sure how well the fruit trees are going to do anyway. The tree was about 40 feet tall. Attached File Ground view of the clearing. Tonight I continued to work on the orchard area. I removed 3 small walnut trees. Those trees are tough. A 3" diameter tree had multiple 2" roots running 4' or more away from the tree. The roots were very strong and difficult for the backhoe to break. One of my trees is getting plant near the root zone of some of the walnut trees. Hopefully it will survive. I cleared out part of the area next to orchard. The large trees is the property line. First time I've ever been able to easily walk to that line. It was overgrown with mostly Honeysuckle. Once cleared it gave me an area to push and mound up all the small trees and branches that I removed. Attached File It wouldn't be Kentucky without a field of rocks. Attached File The future orchard area is starting to take shape. Instead of digging down to the plant the trees I am building up. I figure the soil is contaminated by the walnuts and it turns out is in a depression where the pond as dug but is elevated about 2 feet higher than the other section of the former pond. So I'm putting in new clean soil on top of the dirt and building up. I will be adding more dirt and mulch around the trees as time goes on. I am hoping that will help the get established without having to deal with juglone from the walnut trees. Attached File |

| The tulip bulbs spend some of their energy on their roots creating new bulbs after that first year. I guess you could dig them up, toss the small bulbs and replant the bigger ones. Lot of work though. |
