Seriously, Jax -- As long as you've got the software running, the interfacing is as simple as holding mics to speakers. You'll be amazed. I use PSK31 Deluxe (that comes with Ham Radio Deluxe). They have a new one out now by the same developer (still free) but it requires more resources than my shack 'puter has to give. Set the rig to USB, set to 10-20 watts (max), tune a signal, hold the computer mic on the rig speaker (or bury it in a headphone cup like I have before) and you'll see it decoding on the waterfall. TX'ing is as simple as holding the rig mic in front of your computer speakers. It'll work! |

All digital sound card modes on will be USB regardless whether it is above or below 10 MHz. If anybody wanted to know, all you need to RECEIVE PSK31 signals is a simple headphone cord. Rat Shack patch cable You can even find this at Walmart or even the dollar store. Plug one end into the headphone or external speaker jack of your HF rig or SW radio and plug the other end into the line in jack on your computer sound card. Download the free software from the net and you are receiving. total cost to receive: $5. |

Thanks for the info have had people tell me that they use LSB as well as USB. I just set mine to digital and have made contacts as far away as 8110 miles away on 20 meters, 50 watts, christmas island on 12/23/07. |

At the urging of some other self-reliance oriented hams, I have also taken the plunge into PSK-31. I have a patch cord for the audio in, but to Tx, I hold the mic near the laptop. Kind of a PITA, but it works! I am looking for plans for a simple interface, so the laptop can trigger the radio Tx. Kind of a neat mode. Stay Safe, AGreyMan |
Well I'll be. I guess I can claim my first PSK31 QSOs now. Made contact with GlockTiger and Alkva. I'll agree that keying the mic with the speaker is a PITA. I need to get back to work on the Rigblaster interface I have.

You guys wanna try psk31 again? Not sure if I can do it tonight (had a friend LifeFlighted yesterday thx to a motorcylce accident so we might be at the hospital) but if not tonight I'm up for it tomorrow. Looks like I'll be ghetto for a while. I talked to West Mountain and they think I have a bad RIGBlaster. I can't even get rig control to work much less audio transceive.

Hey Jax, I'm sorry about your friend's accident. Will pray for him in a few minutes. I caught DancingGoat and Briarhopper last night on PSK -- without any web spotting! I was just listening around 80m digital sigs and caught Goat's callsign. We all chatted for a good while. Might really be getting a reliable method now that lots of us are getting up on PSK. Sure beats just hollering in the mic to nowhere and then posting about it.  Oh, and for the benefit of curious onlookers, all my PSK work on 80m is with 25 watts or less and a 4' high antenna. I'm in SC and so far I've easily worked Arfcommers in AR, KY, FL, and VA. I use PSK31 Deluxe (free software, but legacy now with the introduction of Digital Master 780, also free from the same developer) because it's easy and runs well on my aging shack PC. However I love to fire up MultiPSK (as ugly as the interface is) and just scroll around the digi subbands. I'll copy some PSK, then RTTY, then a Pactor NTS net, and I even saw someone calling CQ on Hellschreiber the other day! Now THAT is a cool protocol (been around since the 20's)!! Hellschreiber |

Thanks guys. Friend's still in an induced coma but the breeding on the brain wasn't severe enough to stop surgery so they were able to put a titanium rod in his leg to repair the femur. He's wearing a halo for a fractured neck but otherwise seems to be doing well. Not sure when they'll pull him out of the coma. I know he and his family appreciate the prayers. Turns out a co-worker's daughter is friends with his daughter. Small world. I think I've confirmed the RIGBlaster doesn't work. Can't get rig control to work and the data side doesn't seem to do squat either. I did try the ghetto method a little last night before going to bed but couldn't find a qso anywhere that I could copy. I probably won't make it tonight either. I forgot I'm headed to Orlando for the hamfest and I've got to be up at 5. |

Sorry for not checking the thread last night. I intended to play with PSK, but the digi bands were full of RTTY -- was the CQ Worldwide WPX RTTY contest. They pretty much rendered all PSK and CW bands unusable. So I fired up MultiPSK, set my rig to Digital Vox, and said "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." I worked a little RTTY DX -- Aruba, Cayman Islands, Spain, and somewhere in Central America (can't remember now). They were so loud, I could resist trying. And I grabbed them all first try. I work DX purely for my own satisfaction -- I don't QSL, I just log them locally, but it's fun to grab a DX station every now and then. Plus it was really the first time I've ever worked anyone on RTTY. |
