Anyone every seen something like this before? Some type of bug that made these tubes? Leaves were just starting to come out on the tree and it looks like they got frost bitten. Dark green to black. Not had any frost here in over two weeks. I have 8 Dunstan's and this is effecting two of them.

Close up photos of the leaves? I'm not ignoring your question about what appears to be fruiting bodies of a fungus (I could be wrong about that) but.. What is that line around the bark half way up? it looks like there was a wire or rope wrapped around the tree and it cut through the bark. |

Okay it looks like it is this.
I've never seen anything else that looks like that, and my searches for fungal bodies did not produce the right images. HOWEVER, it's not fungus according to this site. Look at this. Is this is? Smooth barked trees seem to be what suffers from Ambrosia beetle If this is it, you ought to let your county extension agent know you have it. They track the spread of these kinds of things. |

OP here is a good article.
Pay special attention to stress reduction in your trees. They generally entered through damaged areas. Your tree already had that, which I noticed. I will post more pics tomorrow I did prune these trees back in February. They received very good care and weekly watering for their first two years in life here. They must have entered thru the pruning cuts.
