I think it's funny to look at the stations you work on POTA.  I recognize some of the call signs as guys I work CW.  There are some very dedicated hunters out there...

It's usually the same folks. First name basis with a few now. There are newer ones now tho too. POTA is growing. More DX too. When I started DX was rare. Now I usually get at least one. Glad to see this grow. Might be wrong, but I really think POTA is helping keep and grow amateur radio. It gives those of us who aren't rag chewers, aren't into EMCOMM and aren't into the normal contesting something to do. Plus it's camping/outdoors and radio.

Well, it's definitely popular. I was crawling 20 M last night and a guy named Ken from NV who was at a park in Utah had a huge pile-up on his hands. (Phone)

K7xxx Super nice guy. He's on my map as a park to park.

Pileups on late shift are pretty much the norm. Daytime can happen but not as often or as long.

I've worked him 13 times at Dixie National Forest (K-4395).  7 more and I can get a Repeat Offender (Hunter) for that park.  I've been there and it and Cedar Breaks are absolutely gorgeous.  I'm afraid the weather is going to close in on him before I can get 7 more though.  Cedar Breaks usually closes about the 13th of October due to snow.

I'm hoping once the kids get older we can start doing more camping again. We use to go a lot. Anyway, point being that I'd like to go to more out of state parks and camp some with them.

I was looking through my statistics, I apparently didn't get any hunting done in February. My goal for next year will be at least one a month, that and getting set up and running before I miss November at the new place.

Set up a JOTA station at a POTA site today...double win.  40 ssb was slammed.  Got 12 quick on 40 CW.  Then just kinda hunted around.  Got several P2P SSB.  Was the first time I had ever activated SSB.  Did get Sweeden and Croatia on 17.

Got to activate Grandfather mountain state park. Wish I could have done a sota there too but the actual mountain was a hike and kids just couldn’t do it.

Dude,   that's a great pic.

My wife was just asking if next week the fall colors will come out.

possibly next weekend, and we will hit K-1745 again when it does.

I called on .520 while at the swinging bridge area at grandfather mountain. I was able to get 4 contacts there. One was in SC which was probably 50-60mi south.

Myself another member here and another local ham friend activated a SOTA/POTA this weekend. It was probably the most epic POTA I will ever do.

I’ll try and post the maps here when I get to a computer but we were on a mountain top in North Ga at the NC line and talking to stations in Florida, Alabama, costal SC and TN along with south GA on 146.520. It was insane.

Then threw up a wire and made North Pole Alaska on 10w on 20m.

I've got some VHF contacts. But it's so flat down here we don't get much distance unless propagation is open. That's awesome though.

Probably not the best weekend for SSB since you'll be up against the CQ WW SSB contest all weekend.  The bands are likely to be packed with DX contesters.  I do both so I'll watch for you though.

The VHF contacts are an interesting, did the SSB contacts take more time to make than FM?

Got me thinking even more about getting an FT-991A again since I was gifted a 2M yagi. Not SOTA though, not this guy, lol.

It was late in the day and most of the 2M ssb guys had cut the radios off.

My friend that is a member here is a major vhf / uhf weak signal guy. He knew a number of the 2m ssb contacts by name in FL. Think it was only 4-5ssb on 2M. 2 of these we worked also on .52.

Agree with previous comments on how good POTA is for the hobby. Last weekend I heard POTA stations all over the bands. It's more accessible than SOTA for guys outside of the mountain states. A lot more casual operating than humping it up a mountain. Good practice for portable emcom stuff.

@RED_5

HAMRS should automatically log the QSO in UTC time.

...if not, you have something set wrong

what OS ?

OK,  I see what you mean.

what I have done is fooled HAMRS by setting my WINDOWS 10 clock to the time that I activated.

so if I did a POTA activation at 1400pm local, and logged on paper, . . . when I'd get home I'd mal-adjust my PC's clock to 1400pm local.

Open up HAMRS and start entering your QSO's.

You'll only have to edit the mins a bit as you go.

Link Posted: 11/6/2021 10:25:58 PM EDT
[#49]
Yeah HAMRS isn't so great for going back after the fact. You can use any logging software by the way. As long as it exports ADIF. I used N3FJP for a long time when I still did paper logs. It's still my shack logger.

HAMRS just gets used because it works on everything. Including phones, so portability is easy that way.
