I bought mine five years ago, and used it on four or five trips. I don’t think I’ve used in at least two years, and probably more like three. Should I trust it, or buy a new filter?

As long as the rubber seals are good, it should be fine. Test it at home and make sure the piston assembly pushes water through.
I used my old one this summer, it worked fine. Didn't get sick.
