Might as well put my marker in on page 1.
This year I will be shaking things up, no more AR15 in .223 for me. no sirree bob, this year it will be an AR15 in .300 whisper! (supersonic, no supressor of course.)
Now that I have reserved a spot on page one I damn well better get one. It would be a bit embarassing to be skunked and be up front.
And here he is...
Evening of opening day. Rifle is a .300 whisper using a CavArms/Armalite Lower. A very light and handy rifle. Range was around 75 yards.

90 lb. Doe taken at J.W. Corbett WMA by my friend Mike on Saturday 9-6-08.
He's the one wearing the tactical flowery shorts.

He used a PSE w/Axis arrows and a Muzzy 100gr 4-blade from his Summit Treestand. She ran 40 yards and dropped. She was tasty!

I busted a hog on a spot and stalk from 20 yards, but couldn't find him with all the high water. We searched for 4 hours to no avail, but I did recover my bloody arrow.

In our deer camp alone, there were 2 hogs and 2 bucks that were shot and never found. Average depth of water is 22 inches deep and 85% of the 60K acres is flooded. Tree-stand and pop-up blind hunting is SOP in this area for deer.

I'll be returning on Friday with a new gameplan and a new location for my stand.
Google earth is much helpful. I'll be sure to post pics should i be successful.

I sure will!

I'm so busy @ work I can't get any time off right now.  Next weekend Kissimmee River, Starvation Slough and Micco Landing open for archery and i'll be there.

This is my first bow season EVER. My first time shooting a bow was in January this year
when I bought a Diamond Triumph and it's been my obsession ever since.

I was really bummed when we couldn't find my boar, but as i've learned, it's all part of hunting.

Hooked for life!

Holding this spot for what will hopefully be another good season.

And what's going on? I know there has to be more than one successful hunter out there so far. I know season hasn't started for everyone, but I need something to get me more psyched than I already am.

Thanks for the compliments guys.  The doe was 18 yards out.  Usually we have a good ratio of bucks to does.  I don't know what the deal is this year, but it went from being about 1:1, to one buck to three does.  I saw seven does by 6:00 p.m., but this is the only one that had no fawn with her.  All but one of the fawns still had faint spots on them.

Congratulations. Hunting over a beanfield, huh? It must be nice to have crops in your area. My locality is comprised strictly of cattle operations.

Nothing wrong with "just a doe". In fact, that's all I've ever taken in the first 3 weeks of October. The earliest I've ever taken a buck is October 26. I start archery season each year pretty much targeting does, although I wouldn't pass up a big buck if it presented itself. What was the shot distance?

I was thinking about that tonight when I was sitting there, not seeing anything.  If it were only a few select fields, I think it would be advantageous.  Since we are surrounded by crops, it doesn't really do anything for us.   The spot I hunt is the closest thing to a funnel I can find in the area.  But once the crops are off, they will cut across the open field, so at that point I'll probably change my strategy.

I do think the crops help quite a bit for building up large, healthy sized deer.  But with such a selection of food sources(crops everywhere, acorns in the woods, etc.) it doesn't seem any easier to get a pattern on them.

It's funny though, I would like to try an area without crops.  Damn grass is always greener.

Nice job on your doe.
Our season opens Wednesday, I'll start mid month. I allways hope for thet early season doe chance. All crop fields or CRP field here, corn, beans and hay. The crops really help the deer get BIG. Our big bucks weight up to 250 lbs dressed on the scale.

Old photo to show body size.
Last years hunt.

This big buck was just over 240 lbs dressed, and scores around 120.
The smaller bodied buck scored 133.

Dupe from the bow hunting section.

Took this little buck on Friday evening.  I had to endure an entire 8 minutes in the stand!  Before you judge me for taking such a little buck let me explain.  I’ve turned down several small bucks here in Ga this year already.  I have a guy in Tn that let’s me hunt 3,000 acres.  He’s got a beautiful farm and a nursery.  The deer destroy tens of thousands of dollars of trees in his nursery every year.  So, the only stipulation to allow me to hunt this pristine area (my dad and I are only ones with permission to hunt there) is that we have to shoot every buck we can and bring him some jerky every now an then.  Small price to pay and bringing even a spike out to show him makes him very happy and retains our good graces to continue to hunt.

As I said, I was in the stand for 8 min Friday evening.  He came out from behind me about 8 yards away, walked out right in front of me at15 yards, quartered away at a 45 and looked the exact opposite direction from me.
Shot was a little high, arrow in pic as found.  Spine shot, he dropped in his tracks. As fate would have it though, 45 min after this one was down a very nice 6 pt walked out at 5 yards and hung out for 10 minutes!  (1 buck per day in Tn, so I enjoyed the show while gritting my teeth)

Saturday evening, I had 5 does come out.  Pretty dicey for 35 min with 5 sets of eyes watching you, fanned out in a semi circle and coming right towards you.  The biggest one, presented a great broadside shot at 22 yds.  The rest is history documented in the pics.

Couldn’t hunt this morning though, b/c it was so late when I got her out Sat. all the check stations were closed so I didn’t have a tag, so I took advantage

What a weekend!

Got this one on December 1st near Goliad. He is not the huge buck that I saw two weeks before the season opened and hunted for two weekends straight. One of the other hunters sat in a stand for 30 minutes and got him. That is how it goes some times.

I always heard that does(who can have up to 3 fawns at one time, depending on age) have more of an effect on population than bucks.  Strange policy.  Nice deer, though.

The doe is mine.  The button buck is my wife's.  Both shot within about 2 minutes of each other.  My doe dropped from a spine/lung shot and hers was a good lung shot.  No tracking needed.  AR for the doe, .243 for the button.

Absolutely they do, the bucks rubbing the trees in the nursery is what cost him tens of thousands of $'s each year.  If we don't shoot them, the nursery owners in the area (not this guy) will just shoot them under crop damage tags and let them lay and waste.

I was just relaxing when I heard this doe trotting down the hill behind me. She caught me completely off guard, and I barely had time to stand up and grab my bow. I drew, anchored, and mouth-bleated her to a stop at 26 yards. After the shot, she ran perhaps 50 yards, stopped and swayed back and forth, then fell over.

Good job, keep shooting those does.  Not only do they taste just fine, but it helps the overall herd.  I shot 7 does last year and 1 small buck (damn thing hid his rack behind his ears).

Picture of my best deer season. Mine is on the left-shot last week also posted earlier in the thread, the one in the middle was my 14 year old's first deer and the one on the right was my thirteen year old's second deer. All three were desert muleys shot out in the sage brush.

My 14 year old sons first deer. He had an either sex tag, but after hunting two weeks we didn't see a single buck. Saw probably a hundred or so does, a few elk and a moose, but no bucks. It was about a 200 yard uphill shot. It dropped within 5 feet. He was thrilled and i am very proud of him.

Oklahoma primative 2008. 70 yards 240 grn XTP with 100 grn Pyrodex pellets. The deer dressed out at 120lbs and has a 20" spread with 12 points. I think it's gonna be a non typical.
