Is there a reason I can’t put the original bags in my freezer? Thanks

Freezing would kill the weevil larvae that are growing in the rice, assuming there are some.  Instead of using O2 absorbers to suck the oxygen out and kill the weevils, the freezing cold does the job.

We buy it in 2lb bags, vacuum pack it while still in original bag and then freeze.

Perhaps unnecessary but the vac bags are freezer boil microwave compatible, it pulls the air out of the original bag.

Thanks for posting this: I didn't know we should vacu-pack and freeze our bags of rice and beans.

How long should you freeze it for?

Thanks,

Do this.

(Not sure about the second part though.)

Write on it in sharpie when it was packed. Also, if you do a regular size rice batch, just measure out that size for the vac-pac so you can just open and dump it in.

I failed to freeze my rice the first time. Bad move on my part.  Waisted about 250 lbs. Replaced and left the bags out on the deck in subzero weather for a couple of days. I should be good to go.

I just dumped 50 lbs of rice that had gone bad for some reason I assume a bug.
I never had time to put it up properly.
Chickens are thrilled with it though...

Live and learn.

I never knew that freezing rice was a thing.

At the risk of mockery, I will admit to using bay leaves when I pack rice.  I leave it in the original bag which I pierce then pack in vacuum bag with bay leaves.  Seems to work.

When I open the bag for use, I put the rice in an airtight jar along with the bay leaves.

I put the bulk bag in the freezer for a few days then divy it up into 2.5 lb vacuum seal bags and then seal them.

2.5lbs of rice is manageable amount in the kitchen.

And it makes a bunch of rice.

I just opened a bag I sealed in 2011. Tastes like rice. Stored in a cool dry place most of the time.

If you vac-pac the rice, won't the lack of air kill the weevil larvae?

I've heardof people opening up the bag of rice in warm weather and letting larva hatch and go away. I don't  know if its BS or not.

2008 called,,, it wants it's thread back.
Holy shit

Did a vid series back then showing all of this lol.

Freezing does kill the bugs.
So does dropping that rice in boiling water.....

Bay leaves dont keep the bugs away( showed that on video as well).

Pack promptly and correctly ( mylar,o2s) and your risk of insects goes waaaaay down.

Sit your shit in the garage for 2 weeks waiting for your o2s and mylar to arrive increases your chances of issues.

I predict a thread on DE and dry ice next.

I got a 20# bag at Martin's and they had high turnover even pre-COVID.  Did not freeze, found weevils.  Now all rice goes into the deep freeze for a week before being repackaged.

I sift it first.  Then put it in freezer bags and in the freezer.  You'd be amazed at the amount of weevil larvae and live weevils are present in even a 5lb bag of rice.

Massive east coast chain.  Same company as Giant.  I play their gas point games because the Suburban has a 44-gal fuel tank and it's nice to fill it for under 50 cents a gallon.

Bugs are turning your rice into bonus protein.

Just think of it as tiny, tiny pig farming in your rice bag.

I buy calrose rice in 20lb bags and vacuum seal it up in about 4lb portions. Once I open a bag I store it in the freezer but I do not freeze otherwise and never had any issue.

I just cracked open a 25lb of rice that I stored in 07.  Mylar bag 02 absorbers in a 5 gal bucket.
It's perfect.  I cook a pot of about 4 cups and then bag that in 2 serving bags and freeze it for quick meals.

I don't vac seal but do put rice and flour in the freezer for 10 to 14 days.
Then in the storage area with the rest of the items in reserve.
It's a pain to pick the bugs out of the water when boiling rice or sifting them out of the flour.
