Than this which sells for $80 on amazon?

I was thinking of starting with a couple of stainless bread pans to form the body. I've seen examples made with galvanized duct elbows, not sure if that would be better.

I like tinkering with stuff like this but not sure if it's worth the effort.

That's a BBQ not a camp stove.

It’s not possible to BBQ on that. It’s clearly a stove.

That's pretty inexpensive.  You may be able to build it a little cheaper in materials but once you add any labor you're going to be hard pressed to be under that.  Now how long will it last is anyone's guess not knowing much about the construction.

Here's an example of an inexpensive home build though.

And the thread on them:
http://www.hillpeoplegear.com/Forum/forumid/23/postid/496/scope/posts

Hill People was working on a rolled titanium stove that was very lightweight but they had production problems and only a few were made.  They weren't the cheapest but they were incredibly light.  There's a thread about them on their forum as well and occasionally one will show up on their website for sale.

The Hill brothers recommend https://seekoutside.com/tent-stoves/ for lightweight packing stoves.  They are titanium so not inexpensive, but well made.

ETA- Galvanized pipe will work short term, but it tends to quickly rust from the heat.  You'd be better off either buying stovepipe or rolling a sheet like some folks do (there  are build threads on-line as well as youtube).  If you go the galvanized route, be sure to do a hot burn outside to burn off the zinc.  It forms zinc oxide when it heats up and will cause so-called "metal fume fever".

Ammo can stoves seem pretty popular for the DIYer. Google it.

Don't use galvanized anything...  when it heats up it gives off fumes which are harmful.

If you can find an empty beer keg, it is stainless steel and will work really well as a firebox.   You can add legs, and cook top.
