Dang, it's been a really good week. More rockfish (fish tacos! ), and then landed this bright hen steelhead this morning that really kicked my butt. What a blast. Only the second time out with my new Winston Nimbus 7129 spey rod... the cork isn't even dirty yet.

A few bonefish flies that we used down in the Cook Islands. The larger flies in the back are for different species of trevally. One of the things that I find difficult when fishing the flats is getting good fish pictures. Unless you’re with a guide, the closest guy to give you a hand to take a picture could be 100’s of yards away.

On those days I tend to focus on release pics or other cool in water pics. Also I have found that if I take a short video vs trying to capture a singular pic I am usually able to find a screen cap to use as a pic that is much better than I could take fumbling around with a fish, rod, camera etc all by myself. Nice bones and flies by the way. Hope this helps J- |

Thanks, J.
Here are some flies that we use down in Baja. They’re variations of a fly called a Sea Habit but are different colors depending on what bait is there (sardinas, flying fish, etc.). They work great for Roosterfish, dorado, and yellowfin. You just add different colors of flash and bucktail. The rainbow trout version (not pictured) works great for stripers out here. I wet them down on the bottom pictures so you can see the profile. I use a 3/0 2X heavy Gamakatsu: Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Well it wasn’t a huge trout, but it’s the best one I’ve caught so far this year
I am pretty rusty, as I hadn’t fished much the last couple years as my Dad’s health declined and he couldngo with me and fish together like we used to Caught this nice wild brown this evening on the Little Juniata (central Pa) Light hatch of sulfurs and cahills, plus a few small tan caddis Caught this one on a Cahill dry Attached File Caught a few other smaller browns on a double rig with a head head dropped and a caddie emerged pattern, as well as the same Cahill dry So it was a good afternoon out for me |

A couple of lingcod from the past few days. Top one is a "little" 19"er, and the bottom one taped out a bit over 28" -- my personal best by far. These are super strong and aggressive fish ("honey badgers of the sea"), and taste even better than they fight.

Here’s something a little different. It’s called gyotaku or “Japanese fish printing.” From what I gather, it was done as a way of record keeping in the old days. You basically cover the fish in Japanese calligraphy ink (sumi-e) and then press a sheet of rice paper over it. It sounds easy but there is definitely a learning curve. Here’s a pargo (red snapper): Attached File

Just a nice little wild brown trout from the little juniata river yesterday afternoon
Beautiful day in central PA. A little breezy but a decent hatch and number of egg laying tan caddie flies. Water temp was about 52F. Once the sun went behind the mountains the trout were done feeding on top pretty much. Caught a bunch in one nice riffle stretch, none over 9-10”. Although there are much larger trout in there. It’s a very hard river to fish in some pools due to how deep the bottoms drops off quickly. Attached File Another one later Attached File Attached File And saw this crazy lone sulfur floating down the pool Watched it for a while but didn’t see a trout gulp it down. It’s only 3 months late to hatch Attached File |

Covid really put a damper on fly fishing travel for us last year. . .
Getting a bonefish on the reel. . .It was so windy for that entire 2-week trip! I was using an 8wt here but should’ve been using a 9. Some guys were using 10wt’s to make life a bit easier! The constant buffeting of the hood on the rain jacket/sun shirt was enough to drive you crazy. Just another day dealing with the wind on saltwater flats. When the wind is up and there is any type of cloud cover, they are a bitch to spot. Attached File |

Very nice as usual Cujo. I'm very jealous of your time in the salt...
I started the Missouri Blue Ribbon slam last week with a buddy. 9 streams with mostly wild rainbows. Not allot of size, but they are pretty. Attached File |

Very nice, JestersHK! Trout are so beautiful, especially when they’re young and stIll showing the parr marks.
Here’s a quick story. . .One year, caught the “elusive” baby roosterfish down in La Ventana. They are really cute with their big eyes. . . Basically a mini-me version. We’re used to casting big baitfish patterns on 3/0 hooks but IIRC, we were really close to shore so I might’ve had on a sz 2 Clouser. I finally caught one that could fit in the palm of your hand, the Captain and my fishing buddy went to grab their cameras. I took the fly out and placed the baby rooster in the palm of my hand and a second later, BLOOP, a little kick of the tail and he was over the side. The captain and my buddy finally looked up with their cameras and said, “Where did he go. . .” ‘Over the side and back in the water. . .” No photo. Here’s a tiny bluefin trevally: Attached File |

Yeah some of the prettiest ones, never hold still for the camera. You def have a knack for getting it done in the salt. I beat on some durados last year in Cabo, but wish I could get one on the long rod...

I think some have them (actually flies)
I don’t know I’d trust those not to leak Even though it always seems to work out that as soon as I get close to the water, I’ve got to go bad Then it’s a rush to take your vest off, or at least unsnap the suspenders and wading belt. |

I'll see if I have any when I get back home. Imagine Cujo's clouser above but in dark olive and dark or burnt orange on top with a cream or yellow belly and then med thick banding horizontal stripes sprayed on.
Mimics our banded ozark sculpin really well |
