I just slide mine in the bed with a hitch extension rack, but that is not for you.

Mine are heavy and 12&14’.  I could not see using a PVC rack in the bed.  If they went flying at speed you would be so liable and would think a proper, $$$ Thule rack was cheap.

I did build a 1.5” PVC rack for storage at home.  It worked but seemed flimsy and eventually broke from sliding the yaks on it.

I went shopping for you.   Not even 300.00.

The one on the red truck is similar to what most folks used in the '80s (minus the V bracket, most folks just put a piece of carpet or firehose on the cross bar) but using the stake pockets trucks used to have.  They would be either lashed in or use turnbuckles.  A ladder rack is a better option for most folks these days.  As for carrying bikes, a lot of folks had fork and wheel clamps on the outside of the rack so that the bed of the truck could still be used.  Before Yakima, Thule, etc were really around folks used a cut piece of PVC as a wheel tray.

$138 ladder rack.  Add some C clamps and you're GTG.  You'll spend that on materials.

I used a ladder rack for several years to haul canoes and kayaks until I found a TracRac for $50.

Came out nicer than I thought it would.  How did you anchor it down?
