Looking to setup a simplex operation between myself and my father, who lives about 250 miles away.  He has a 75' tower with a uhf/vhf antenna and room to build any antenna setup he could dream up.  I do not.  I'm limited to attic dipoles or using a portable setup like a Buddipole.

I have a 10m attic dipole that runs pretty good, when the band cooperates.

We've looked at setting up a DMR or D-Star private network using hotspots and honestly it looks fun however its internet dependent - and he doesn't have reliable internet.

We're also exploring an NVIS setup

Anyone here use DMR or D-Star?  Any other ideas?

We have a small DMR network here in central Idaho that works well, but, as you mentioned, it is internet dependent for anything outside the range of the repeaters.
With marginal internet, the hotspot idea is going to not work well, unless you could build a directional antenna for better internet reception.

NVIS is probably your best bet, 40M during the day and 80M at night.
Also, don't forget about 60M.

You can run DStar via HF and need no internet.

Icom's IC-7100 does D-star (DV) natively on HF, just like any other mode.

Anyone have experience building a D-Star repeater?

Any chance of being able to put up a stealth random wire, or an end-fed half-wave?

Maybe.  Depends on the overall height needed.

Yes, but doing that is completely pointless in this particular scenario. He still needs to get a signal between his place and his dad's.

It's also pointless from the perspective that the link margin for HF DStar sucks, analog SSB works better.

For NVIS over just a couple hundred miles, you ain't gonna need much.

I've seen as low as 8' work, but I think optimal is 12-20' on 80m, just for nvis.

My son runs an MFJ 133 foot EFHW for 80m ( $50) out his second story backyard window to a tree ( has 20 watt radio ). Height 15-20 feet.

Nobody sees it, it works and we have communicated at 1 watt each this summer. and have comms at will on 40 and 80.

With olivia it is a no brainer.

We are about 80 miles away but it also worked when I was operating portable with the same antenna on a remote fishing trip and we were 200 miles away.  It also worked for me to contact ECARS and that was a good 400 miles away. My height was about 10 feet.
