Been doing it by hand and am thinking about getting something better.  I like Stihl 2 N 1 Easy File Chainsaw Chain Sharpener but I see Pferd is making a near identical copy for half the price.  It the Stihl work the price or are you paying for the name?

Is their a better gadget to sharpen a chainsaw?  I really need two of them a 7/32" for my chainsaw and a 11/64 for the pole saw.

I use a 2 piece file kit w/ depth gauge (for the rakers). I have heard good things about the stihl 2 in 1.

Now that I'm getting the hang of it I can knock them out fairly quick.

Yeah I can do it fairly quickly with a round file and a flat file for the rakers but I need new files and rather than buy separate files I though I would upgrade to a gadget if they actually help speed and repeatability.

I got the stihl branded 2-in-1's.  They're made by Pferd.    Either brand works, I just got the Stihl for $30 OTD at my Deere/Stihl dealer.   $34.99 + 10% spring discount.

Some of the best money I've spent https://www.stihlusa.com/products/chain-saws/filing-tools/2in1file/
I can sharpen an 18" chain in about 10 mins.

That's the one I am talking about.  That is a good price.  Amazon wants $60 for that same sharpener and $33 for the Pferd version.  Next time I am in the local ACE hardware I will have to see what their price is they are the local Stihl dealer.

They are $34.99 on the Stihl website, you just have to pick it up at your local Stihl dealer. I am going to get one this weekend and try it out, I've seen great reviews about it.

Sounds like a trip to the local Stihl dealer is in order.

Get the Pferd, they make the Stihl one that is re-branded and charge less for it.

^this for sure. No reason to pay any extra for the orange and white stihl version.

Make sure to get the right size for your chain.

2 in 1 here. Never thought $30 was so over priced until I read this thread

(Two pack of files, $7. Raker gauge, $5. Raker file, $4. That’s $16 for the cheapest google return plus you’ll want a handle or two. Ohh well)

Round file, usually with an old school guide and a flat file with safety edges for occasionally hitting the rakers. Doesn't take very long unless you really fuck the chain against a rock or something.

I got the Stilh version at the local ACE hardware.  They did not have the size for my 8-inch pole saw but I got new round files the correct size for that.  I give the chainsaw a touch-up with it and I really like it.  Easy to use and seemed to do a good job.  Well really see after the next time I hit a piece of steel in the next tree or accidental touch the ground coming out of a cut.

I have probably double the value of my chainsaw by adding the Stihl sharpening tool.

I use the Sthil 2 in 1 and a regular round file in a guide. I hit every third sharpening with the 2 in 1 and twice with the round file that way my rakes don't dig as much. If it's really dull I'll use my 12 volt Dremel tool I have been using for the last 30+ years.

Got tired of hand sharpening for 3 saws x 2-3 chains each.

Bought this, never been happier

I bought a Stihl sharpener Friday. Used it while cutting up one of two trees left to clean up. Wow, what a difference. Just taking 3-4 minutes to touch up blades during fuel/bar oil fills made a world of difference. Throwing good sized chips. Local places charge $7-$8 per chain for sharpening. Spent $34.95 and made it up in the 4 times I did it yesterday.

I bought an electric sharpener from HF. I works well. About 10 minutes per chain. A lot quicker and easier than manual sharpening. But you can’t take it along in da woods.

Hand filer here. Usually file each tank of gas.

One light stroke per tooth and done.

About five minutes for a 20" bar.

I use a round file most of the time.  I have a Stihl 2 in 1 that I use about every 5 tanks of fuel.

I've got a similar sharpener from Stihl.
I found a barely used one cheap.
I have about 1/2 dozen chains for 2 chain saws.
I sharpen all at once and then swap out chains as needed.
When I'm on my last chain I sharpen all of them again.

Stihl 2 - 1.  Just make sure you buy the right one for your chain.  They have multiple options.

Use 12 volt oregon/grandenburg sharpeners.
We cut in/hit glacial silt, frozen tundra and pebbles.

Want to get a bigger electric sharpener and trying to decide on which one.
