I'm pretty sure Salty fat-fingered the model number... I'm not sure which one he meant.

Thanks, the 8134 is cheaper than the Axis and Acti cameras I was looking at, but it appears to be an indoor camera. Is there a comparabe outdoor rated camera you recommend?

Right now I just want to get a few cameras up to try out and then upgrade over time.

It's basically a 241 with a lower frame-rate.  The 2400 splits 10 FPS across its four inputs... the 241 divvies up 30 FPS across its four channels.

Any bullet cam you recommend? Reason being is that in some areas of a beach house are hard to reach and the bullet cam seams like it would be easier to adjust. Think of a house on stilts near the beach and trying to get to the eves.

I really like the specs and price of the Vivotek dome camera and will be getting one of those for a different area.

I have one of these... it's about the same power as the other domes I've been using... but it's more expensive.

I have multiple webcams, all bought used or very cheap....less than$10 each, that I have  hooked w/motion capture software for the p/c (freeware). They are all internall mounted....IE on the inside of a window, I have spent roughly $50 for a usb extension cords and they alll seem to work well.....except the viewing angle is not the best.

Anyone else care to share in there webcam cheap solutions?

TGM - Need some guidance - I'm a little overwhelmed, and still a bit furious about my car being broken into twice. The local police aren't helping at all.

Here is my house. The street has regular traffic  because it extends from one end of town to the other. (both foot and car traffic)

My car is in the driveway, my fiance's parks next to me. Garage is under construction so no cars can fit in there at this time. I can barely fit my motorcycles in there right now.

After both our cars were broken into the first time, I added two light fixtures to the outside of the house, on either side of the garage. I have a 100 watt (equivalent) bulb in each light, and upgraded the fixture over the door along with a 200 watt (equivalent) bulb there as well. And still people are poking through our yard and breaking into our cars. Driveway is about 30' long (estimated)

I'm looking at getting a good alarm for my car, but that would only cover my car, not my fiance's car or the house. So I'm considering an IP camera pointing down the driveway.

I do not have  money for this... with the way things are at work, I'm barely making ends meet. I'm going to be selling stuff to buy security stuff, so more stuff doesn't get stolen (as silly as that sounds), but I need to do something! I'm skilled with computers, I can run wires anywhere in the house (though the attic is an absolute nightmare to get through), I have excellent and secure WiFi, I also have a file server I can use as a video server...I just don't have any software or money.

Any suggestion on camera that will suit for driveway coverage in the $200 range (probably the best I can afford without putting this off for a few months)? Eventually I'll need a camera to cover the shed (added since this photo was taken), and the back of the house which IMHO is our weak point. I can totally see someone breaking in through a basement window at the back of the house, grabbing computers, TVs, and guitars, and hauling out the front door to a car waiting around the corner. But right now, I want my driveway covered - and I'm still seething about this latest break in. Any suggestions and helping reel me in a bit from going overboard are greatly appreciated. Right now I'm so pissed I'm about to camp out in the car with a baseball bat and start swinging for anyone who reaches for the door handles.

Edit to Add:

Here is an old photo showing the garage/soffit area I'm thinking about putting a camera. I can also put something in the windows over the drive way, as that's my living room.

I'd put one right in the top corner of that garage door (either side).

But $200 doesn't give you much to work with, unless you're OK with picking up a camera secondhand on Ebay.  You can sometimes pick up a used Acti dome for 2-300 bucks.

Maybe look at the Acti TCM-1111 bullet camera. New they can be found for under $300. I have not found a comparison review of this camera, but for the price it seems ok.

What about placing them perpendicular to your driveway? That would have them parallel to the sidewalk and street.

I'm sure you could rig it up better than that.

If nothing else, put a photocell switch in your car, and attach it to that wireless transmitter.  The moment your dome light comes on, you'll get an alert inside the house.

There's all sorts of ways you could make that deal work.

I would run a PoE cable to that mailbox and hide a cam in it pointing back at the house. something with a decent wide angle of view - or maybe double up and use 2 cams for better resolution.

And TGM

I have 2 of those 2U server cases - they are loud, and its all the fault of that fancy punched front grille. Other owners have cut out the area in front of each fan - and the unit goes near silent.  I plan to make a few complete replacement front panels to deal with the noise issue. The great redeeming feature of those cases is that they are 100% screw assembly - no rivets so everything can be taken apart and put back - a modder's dream.

My replacement aims to increase flow - not throttle it down.

More important I can add more front panel access - additional USB ports etc.

I also added a mount for a 2.5" HDD as the system drive - the 4x 1.5TB drives are pure storage - not system files.

Looks like the 1st camera I ordered (an Acti 7411) will be here on friday and I will set it up this weekend.

I was wondering what the best way is to view the cameras on my TV in a different part of the house? Do I just run HDMI cable from the computer to the TV, or is there a better way?

With digital cable systems, it's become more difficult to inject the camera data into your cable stream.  You have to get with one of the higher-level techs in your local cable system (don't even bother with the first-tier tech support people) and see if it can even be done.

I elected not to do that, and instead I duplicated the VGA output from my main DVR to several TVs in the house via Cat6... but that's an expensive solution.  If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't do that again.  You'd be ahead to put in a wireless access point, and getting your streams on your tablet via IP Cam Viewer (the version by Robert Chou).  It's available for iPad and Android (phones and tablets).  This is one of the big advantages of Network Cameras over Analog... with the latter, you have no choice to but duplicate your DVR's VGA output through some video-over-X method.

I do the iPad/Android tablet thing, and get all my streams that way... it's portable, cheaper, and works.

OK.  I'm going to get in on this free consultation.  Firstly, I appreciate all of the information.

I want to have video of my front porch, maybe the closet my safe hides in, and maybe the living room (access to the room that the closet is in, though there are privacy issues with the two interior cameras for adult type adventures with my wife  ;) ).  After reading your thread I specced a $300 micro ATX PC with barebones everything and a 2 TB drive.  I also selected a TrendNET POE switch.  I'm probably going to use your Nuuo SCB-5004 4-port encoder card suggestion as this will be PC-based.

I'll probably do this in small chunks.  I plan to cut out a hole on the wall in my closet to mount a box.  I need to see how big the micro ATX case is first.  I already have a cable modem and network switch in this closet.  Running ethernet wires is easy.

I want to start with one camera on the front porch.  I am more concerned with daytime forced entry at this point, so night vision is not really an issue.  My truck has been broken into twice, but I'll worry about that later before I spend a bunch of money and get in over my head or pick the wrong components.

If you agree with this route, then the next question I have is that I need a suggestion on a dome POE camera with a good picture.  I hate surveillance video that doesn't allow you to positively ID someone.  I wouldn't need more than a week's storage, and I would only record on movement.  I can provide a picture of my front porch.  Any suggestions?

In edit: I may skip the extra PC and just buy the switch to test the system out on my PC.

Uh oh.  Looks like an extra $530 to upgrade NUUO for up to 4 IP cameras!  This is getting expensive.

I'm not sure you're clear on the concept of IP cameras.

Each IP camera is a self-contained device; essentially a small computer with a camera attached.  They digitize their own images, and run an internal webserver (which is why you can get video streams from them with a web browser like IE or Firefox).  In their simplest form, most only need a power supply, and a network connection.  You can configure the camera to use its built-in video motion detection (for whatever scene they're covering), and they will email alerts/images to you if anything happens.

The above arrangement is absent any sort of "camera software" or "NVR software."  The IP camera will function just fine all by its lonesome... but the downside of that arrangement is that there's no constant recording going on anywhere.  If your neighbor says his house was robbed, and wants you to check your cameras at about 2PM yesterday afternoon for a vehicle description, you're hosed... because if it didn't trigger your video motion detection or other sort of alert, no images were stored anywhere.  THAT is the purpose of NVR software... it records all the time, and allows you to "back up the tape" and see what happened at a given time.

I personally use both.  I have an NVR (Luxriot) that records 24/7... and for quite a stretch, since it has 6TB of storage in the machine.  I also use the internal software in the cameras to send email images/alerts to my cell phone when various sensors are tripped.  Some of the cameras also record internally to SD cards via video motion detection as a backup, in th event the NVR got damaged/stolen (I don't use video motion detection for Email alerts, since the false-alert rate is too high with video motion detection).  Other cameras send images off-site to an FTP server.

Layers, and multiple redundancies... it's the name of my game.

ETA:  and if you think about it, the different recording/alert modalities serve different purposes.  My NVR records full-time, and serves as a go-back-and-look repository of images.  Immediate alerts go to my cell phone, and don't come from the NVR... they come straight from the cameras themselves (triggered by various hard-wired sensors that are connected directly to the cameras, and configured to sent email alerts through the camera's internal software.  Note: this doesn't affect the video stream being recorded by the NVR at all... that's still going on full-time).  The images are ultimately still stored on the NVR in case I want to review them later... but a heads-up set of images has already gone out to my phone, and I'm probably already watching the event live, streamed straight from the camera.

See what I mean?

Yes.  The camera says it comes with software just like any webcam.  Won't the streams be stored on the PC running the software?  And about that camera...seem decent?

Can Luxriot be configured to send you the email alerts instead of using the camera's software?

I just ordered one of these that was used.  We'll see how that goes...  The software that it comes with only works for this model.

Never used one of those... let us know how it works.

ETA:  realized that I never answered your question about the Trendnet camera.  I have no experience with that one, but it appears to have Luxriot support.  That's a plus.

Looking for camera recommendations for a 3 camera install at a vacation home. I'm primarily interested in event detection (pool guy shows up, UPS dropoff, unknown persons skulking around) and secondarily in recording/playback. The locations are outdoor under eaves with rare weather extremes of 30-105 deg. We are looking for wide field of views .. 90 to 150 depending on location. Illumination is not good .. we want to stay away from visible floodlights. Distances of interest range from 8 - 30m depending on location. We have Cat5e run to the locations.  We'd prefer dome units unless there's a compelling reason for another form factor.

Prior experience with cheapo Linksys cams resulted in a lot of false event alerts. Still, we'd like to have camera-driven email notification.

From what I've read here and elsewhere, PIR works best but can we get decent video motion detection to work? We are very unlikely to try a DIY from an external PIR to a DIO enabled camera.

Culling through forums has lead to the Acti TCM-7811 or 7411, Vivotek FD8362, a Mobotix which is probably out of price range. Also curious about ClareVision CV-C4-100 ... this company touts its event detection via software but there's almost nothing online .. and the camera must be OEM'd but I can't identify from where.

IME, no.

I must echo this.

There's a reason why I went with hard-wired sensors to trigger email alerts and such... I was TIRED of false alarms.

Fortunately, the wiring for the sensors is dead easy... you almost can't get it wrong.

Any experience with the 7811?  It has PIR (and IO so I could add the external PIR sensor), and the IR ...   Or what would you step down to if I was to use an external PIR and external IR illuminator?   Thanks ... the Clare guys really tout their software motion detection but I can't find a real testimonial so I'm eliminating them.
