For those really getting into POE cameras there is currently a really good option for POE switches on eBay. The eBay seller e-CyclePro has 48 port enterprise grade POE Cisco switches for $49.99 plus about $40 shipping. https://www.ebay.com/str/ecyclepro These switches are way over kill for home security cameras but look at it this way you can buy an 8 port generic POE China switch for $100 or get a 48 port enterprise grade POE switch even cheaper. Most include the C3850-NM-2-10G uplink adapter which you could sell for $20 if you didn't want it. Only catch is you need a bit of Linux knowledge to configure but it is very easy and AI will tell you the commands. Put version 16.6.9 software, which is free, on it and there is no licensing or anything else required. It does have a web interface once setup where you can cycle the power on the camera circuits. No other vendor prices these at this level or even close. Everyone else is 2x or more. These switches do not come with power cords and require a specific shape cord for Cisco devices but they are available on Amazon for $7.  |

Finally got a couple more cameras up, although in temporary locations. The color night vision cameras are amazing in low light. It can't be pitch black but it doesn't take much light. Here is what my eyes see looking into my back yard. There is yard light on a pole in the back to far right. The soft glow on the bottom right is the flood light LEDs and the the color camera. The object labeled dish is just a clear plastic dish I put scraps in for wildlife.  This is the view from the color night vision camera. Obviously not crystal clear but given the low amount light it is an amazing image.  |

I put up a RLC-811a on the driveway to replace a RLC-510a. I wanted the optical zoom on the 811 as it doesn't reset when you lose power. After the rains I discovered the flaw in my installation. I put it under the eaves, but they don't extend far enough to cover the camera. It was useless with rain hitting the lens. A little more cover is needed. Other than that, it works great. I'm still fine tuning the alarm thresholds to ignore chickens. |

The 811a seems like a solid camera but if it gets a decent amount of water on the housing, such as from an eave with no gutter, the water will find a way into the camera. More so if you have freezing temps. They have a black cap on the front of the camera that extends outside and above the enclosure. There are seals and stuff to keep the water out but water can find a way past them. I've started putting a bead of silicone on the top edge where the black plastic meets the enclosure just as a precaution. |

BUMP. We have been having issue with porch pirates so I just went Nuclear Option. Say hello to my little friend. Attached File It hasn't arrived yet but I am excited. F theives. Reolink has a new camera coming out, it is a 180 degree wide view with a 16x auto tracking lens integrated into it. It sounds impressive but I will have to see how well it works once they release it. Wide view coverage plus zoom with tracking all in one would be a game changer, if it works as advertised. Their CES presentation on it was pretty vague. The new Reolink cameras are supposed to take up to a 512GB SD card as well. |

It strikes me just how dated some of the info in this thread is... it's almost a history-of-CCTV-cameras-101 thread. It's probably time to start a new thread with current-day tech and information... but that might have to wait until my work schedule lightens up. |

My Reolink cameras are working great. I did have an issue with both of the 833A cameras initially. It got cold not long after I installed them and they lens fogged up on the inside. They are fully protected from rain so was unsure why. I emailed Reolink. Very responsive customer service. They told me to take the cover off the SD card cover on a warm day and leave it off all day. I did but also took it a step further and warmed the camera gently with a heat gun. Got the camera pretty warm but not dangerously warm. Probably a little over 100degrees or so. No more than the camera would get if exposed to a hot summer day. After a little bit of that, I closed up the SD card cover and haven’t had any issues since even on very cold days. I did find other incidents of the same issue online. If you find that issue, try that fix. I haven’t had the lens fogging issue with any of the other model Reolink cameras I have…just the 833A cameras. |

| I've had issues with new cameras from them fogging up. It all depends on how they are stored and transported. A cold camera that is first plugged in will often fog up. Typically, after 24 hours it will clear on its own. The camera generates heat so the cold to warm ends up creating vapor inside that condenses on the cold lens. They do have desiccant packets on the inside which is why after the whole housing warms for about 24 hours the fogging goes away. I've had that on 1224A models that I stored in an unheated location. They sent me a demo unit for a new camera and it fogged up for 2 days after I first plugged it in but then cleared up and has been perfect since. Submit |

Interesting results. I have a single Trackmix camera and really like it. Might get another one or two eventually. I also am thinking about getting one or two of the battery powered door bell cameras...one for the front door and one for the shop to capture human level events. Realistically any cameras are probably overkill because I live in a very safe area. But we love to be able to check things out from wherever we are in the world with an internet connection. |

His classification is for a specific scenario. A lot of people hate on the DUO 3 because the FOV was changed losing some vertical view compared to the DUO 2. If you don't need the extra vertical view area the DUO 3 is better by far. |

I purchased an RLC-823S2 which I think is their most expensive camera. I will probably end up returning this. I also purchased a Trackmix POE. Trying to figure out where to put the Trackmix. May end up adding another Camera location. So now I have a real hodgepodge of cameras.  After I get the traxmix installed, I will have- 1 trackmix POE 2 12MP cameras 4 8MP cameras Some are dome, some are non-dome, none are bullet-style. |

It doesn't rain much in Colorado but when it does, it is often violent. I've already had 2 Reolink cameras fail due to water intrusion. I feel like the system is poorly designed for cameras that are supposed to be used outside. Water gets into the connector for the ethernet connection. |

I just finished installing one on my parent's windmill on their farm. On a clear day you can read the towns name on the water tower 2.5 miles away. Also if the end does go bad from water you can cut it off and wire on a RJ45 jack. Then use a coupler. That at least gets the use of the camera back. The bottom picture is how the connector should hang so water can't pool up inside it.
