Anyone here have any experience with the Baofeng tri-band radios?

Would like some recommendations and opinions.

I have a triband UV5R ( I think ) does VHF, 220, and UHF.  It did not come with an antenna that does all 3 bands. It came with 2 antennas.

I forget the configuration I think it is VHF/ UHF or VHF/220.

It works, just have to carry an extra antenna.

It is just like all my other baofengs, I hardly ever use it.

I have one that I use occasionally.  Its a nice starter radio, but I would definitely check to see whether there is a 1.25m repeater somewhere in your immediate area.  If there isn't the extra band won't do you any good.

Yes there is one in town. It's actually closer than the other repeaters in the area.

I think the only advantage to 1.25m would be if others you wanted to talk to were running it too, it's sorta private, in that not a lot of people use that band.

That is why I picked up my triband UV5R, because I have a local 220 repeater.

A few friends and I picked up some tri-band Baofengs.  We are going to put a 1.25M repeater up at the ranch on a 70’ pole so we (hopefully) can all communicate on a semi-private basis on 220.  Ours are the X3Plus (I think),  were supposed to be 18W but are labeled 10W and are probably 5W.

You pays your money and takes your chances with Baofeng.  I think they are OK radios, great receivers and decent transmitters, but never what they are advertised to be.

You gotta get on Wish if you want to get the secret high power Baofengs, they have the real deal, face-melting models.

I have the UV5x3, which at the time, was the newest/latest updated chip. I like them (have 2), but I'm not a regular user and only do simplex. I also have the Wouxun KG-UV8E (also x2), which is more rugged and considered higher quality - they are scarce stateside now, no idea about Wish/AliEx, etc... 1.25M is supposed to propagate better, no idea if that's true. Using Nagoya and Abbree Tribands with counterpoise, tuned with a NanoVNA.

I have a Baofeng UV-82X 2m/1.25 m dual band, works fine but typical Bofunk issues.

220MHz is relatively popular here so went with better, but multitudes more expensive radios, Kenwoods, TH-D74A, TH-F6A, Alinco DR-235, etc.

I have one (UV-5RX3) with the two antennas. There are 220 repeaters in the area, but I haven't picked up anything on that band. That radio does OK (for a Baofeng) on VHF & UHF.

Forget to mention there is a ham who uses his 5x3 to check into the 220 net and have to say his audio is excellent.

Lucky, 220 is my favorite band above HF. Antennas are like 1 foot quarter wave so easy to calculate, can use a multitude of military antennas like the little fold out satcom ones and also my military radios but there's nobody here on it.

I have a couple of the Baofeng tri-bands. They are nice in that it is much more private on a repeater, and if using in simplex, they are virtually all yours with no other ears.
