| Threw out a CQ Arfcom on 3.961 but didn't hear any replies. Tuner is having a hard time tuning 80m which isn't a big surprise given I have an EFHW that's really too short for 80m. |

We had a total of 7 check ins on 20 meters. A total of 79 check-ins on 40 meters. I was hoping to get at least 87 check-ins. Maybe next time. LOL. I was bare-foot on 20 but was using the amp on 40 meters. Sorry but I never had a chance to come back to any of you guys. So, what have we learnt? Any observations, suggestions, constructive criticism? It would be nice to have a back-up NC, so we can take turns when a pile up happens. |

I've been jammed up with things lately but see some time off come early April unless something happens. When I do get some time off I am planning on leaving the rig on all day and making Arfcom QSOs....meaning I want your screen name.* SCW Thanks for the link. I got to hear at least a small part of it. There are a handful of unlicensed Baefong guys and naysayers in GD and if we can get a shitload of screen name QSOs it will turn a few heads...and maybe smarten a few people up. |

I'm qrt for the night. Got on right at 2100 and couldn't get a hold of anyone on 213. Went up to arf alt on 40 and picked up cjk which was cool! then I spilled my beer which was decidedly uncool tried 80 but nogo. I'll be around some more but we should try to get this daily for a while. |

There isn't enough time to go to 80 meters. Thank you all for participating. Let's do this more often. Maybe 2-3 times per week and allow everyone to share their situation report. |

I heard many of the other stations which pleased me greatly.. For backup a seasoned op with a nice antenna with QRO capability would be nice my nomination for backup goes to @aa777888-2 personally. Both you guys are seasoned confidant operators and have stations with solid recieve on even weak signals like mine. The amps make it a breeze to listen. Some of the check-ins are tough but with a strong net control it really is such a pleasure to participate. Next time you should collect screen names I'm curious how many people were actually members and how many were trying to just get into the pileup. Bravo sir! |

The other issue may have been that it was a contest Saturday night. The band is crowded twice over and people just make contacts for the hell of it. Plus Gyprat sounds nice so people want to talk to him So I'd recommend the database approach, and maybe moving it to a week night when the bands are not so crowded. That might even be better, since Saturday evening will go back to a normal evening for going out once this pandemicomonium goes away. As for me personally, I can't make a 1900 Eastern net with my schedule. I can barely make a 2000 net (which was why I checked in late). |

I have a large database of callsigns vs. screen names. If net control had something like that they would know. And if someone wanted to try to participate in the net, they could PM net control with their call beforehand so that it could be added to the database. I'm willing to toss my SN on the air but I'd be the most comfortable with not naming the sites web address Ar15.com. Call it arfcom or somthing, I know Google will still get you here but one little thing between my callsign(address) and posts about my guns is nice. That might be slightly tinfoily but it seems like a nice middle ground to me. ETA: another possibility is that we could "salt" our screen names over the air to make them less easy to search for. Example, add arf to the beginning. So I'd check in as my call plus arfltcetme. Harder to copy if you don't know what to expect but easy to copy if you do. My database of calls currently consists of only three arfhams. ![]() I should keep better notes on the scratch pad. |

I have no problem saying ar15.com or arfcom over the air, been doing it a long time on ssb, digital, DMR, etc. I've had a pic of me shooting my M1 Garand on my QRZ for many years, it generates a lot of positive comments. Only once, did I get a negative response, and that was from a fucking frenchman ! . . . QRZ is where hams typically go to see who there are talking to. Some of you guys have great pages, and some of you have zero pics or info. I suggest putting some stuff on there, pics of your station, hobbies, ect. It's a great way to get a conversation rolling. . |

Dude! They let you bring your own HF?? I was deployed right after 9/11 and into OIF (on ships obviously) and a couple of the guys tried to bring HF with them. Huuuuuge no no. You would have thought they asked to bring Chinese surveillance equipment with us. Issued radios and issued satcom only. Period. Any ham radios were a guaranteed confiscation and trip to see the man. |

ETA: To apply, I had to get clearance from the NATO spectrum manager, who then submitted my application to the Afghan Ministry of Communications, waited about 10-12 weeks to get it back and went from there. I learned how to work split by default as every time I got on and started getting spots, I would get mobbed. It was the most useful thing I did on my tour and I QSL'ed 100%. Not many folks have worked Afghanistan. |

Just hover your mouse over your screen name and look at the url Again, I already have built up a pretty good database of screen names vs. calls, and I bet @seek2 has one also, because of the digi net. The list of screen names in the combined databases could be published (without call signs, of course). If you are not on the database just PM your call to net control and be put on. When the net runs, check-in's can be checked against the database by call sign alone. Anyone not on the database can be asked on the air if they are a board member and, if they are, for a screen name. Anyone reluctant to put a screen name over the air can PM it later. They wouldn't have to be excluded. |

I didn't ask for Arfcom screen names because many members were uncomfortable with the idea during our previous nets and emergency practice drills. I respect and value their privacy. Honestly, I don't even keep a list with Arfcom callsigns and screen names for the same reason. Giving obscure numbers and code phrases may be against the FCC amateur radio license rules and regulations. I have no problem calling CQ Arfcom because during the net, I paused once in a while and explained what Arfcom means. Several guys did tell me their Arfcom screen name. Thank you. Why not keep it simple? Just post a reply with something like: " I'm checked in". You can also send me a PM and you'll be included in the list. Do this now and I'll compile and post a list in a couple of days. Several guys mentioned that doing this on a weekend is not a good idea because of frequent contests. I totally agree. We can keep doing this on Tuesday evenings, like we used to. Do you guys think that using an amp was a bad idea? A strong signal often generates a pileup. Once it happens, everyone jumps in. It's "monkey see, monkey do" from there on. LOL. I thought about going split but the band was tightly packed. I had to use tight filters and a notch filter to be able to hear anything on the net frequency. 7.213 Mhz is a poor choice to start with. Too many AM stations near that frequency. Also, many ops don't even know how to work split. |

Ive nothing to hide but would prefer they not come up together with a google search. You just don't know what the political climate may be in the future. Net control should run an amp if possible. Split operation, where better to learn? you can follow the thread and post for help if needed. |
"What have you given us Mr. Franklin?" "A Republic, if you can keep it."

Split would be OK for check in purposes, but likely have to switch to simplex for any group comments/discussion. Good move going to call sign numbers during the net when the feeding frenzy was greatest. Calling for mobiles, portables, etc helped those operators. |
