I survived round 1. Now just a thunderstorm. Power was out for about 30 minutes. Back on but flickering. I don’t know if my antenna survived

My oldest brother became a believer in ham radio when we were going back to his house and I had my radio tuned into the local Skywarn. They had a report of a tornado on the ground and it was between us and his house. We detoured to get around it and when we got to his house they were just then announcing a tornado on the TV. About 12 minutes between when we heard about it on Skywarn and when the media broadcast the warning. Twelve minutes means the difference between getting into a shelter and being carried off to the next county.

Even though I have surge protectors and such, I still unplug all my radio gear (and antennas) when lightning is afoot.

I'm one of ten Skywarn net controllers for my area. I wasn't net control for this event because I was still at work when it was activated. It's amazing how much quicker you get information. The local news stations for this area are out of Cincinnati. I know things at least 10 minutes before they make it to the media. They think we are just a bunch of stupid hillbiilies anyway. Cincinnati is over 60 miles away, but we are in their coverage area.

I was portable doing the MO QSO party. Heard you on like 7.290 checking a new antenna with some net.

You were a clear 53 into MO, and as strong as the rest of the Texas stations.

Cool!  I had just gotten my brand new Yaesu FT-991A up and running on my low 40m dipole.  I was running it on a 40 AHr battery just to get it going and make sure it worked.  You heard me checking in on the 7290 traffic net here in Texas just to get a signal report and make sure the audio was OK.  Everything seems to work so far.

I even got it up and running on Winlink VARA HF (after futzing with a couple of menu items).  I was so happy I got it working on a digital mode without too much hair pulling that I took the rest of the afternoon off!

Maybe I'll be on the new radio for the Tuesday night net.

I was just admiring the wall of lightning on the map. We are supposed to get winds over 40mph as well. I am on the EFHW, I took down the DXC and the delta loop. The bands are amazingly devoid of traffic

I hope we have some sort of a net tonight.  I want to try out my new FT-991A on the CHA Tactical Delta Loop (TDL) on 40m.
If the TDL isn't too good on 40m I'll go back to my normal 72' EFRW.

I won't be able to participate this evening. I disconnected my coax from my antenna's 75 ohm matching cable to mow the yard. When I went to reconnect it, the connector broke on the matching cable. I was hoping it would be a simple resolder, but I need a new connector.
