It doesn’t look like there’s one going yet. Our bow season starts next weekend, so I don’t have any success pics yet. I have really enjoyed watching the bucks on my place grow this year though. Decent food and mineral licks seem to have really helped.
I’m really interested to see this buck over the next couple years if he makes it. He was a 5pt last year. Attached File Then there’s some of the others. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I watched these 3 this morning at about 20 yards. It was a 10 min battle with myself over whether to shoot or not. I ended up deciding to not put an arrow through one. Attached File

A nice muzzleloader buck I got on Wednesday here in Nevada. 16 bucks and 40-50 does in three days of hunting. Got him in the evening on the way back to camp. I hit him back too far. Hit the tenderloins and the major artery along the back. He dropped, rolled down the hill, then trotted 50-75 yards and piled up in view. My best buck in 21 years of hunting. http://i68.tinypic.com/23nn8p.jpg http://i63.tinypic.com/2d1wqky.jpg http://i67.tinypic.com/mmr59c.jpg Good luck to all this fall. That sucks. Don't get too concerned about training too much. Unless you are planning some crazy miles long backpack hunt, it's not too difficult. The biggest challenge is the elevation.
I killed this buck at about 6500 feet and he was 20 yards off a county road when I first saw him. There are a lot of units to hunt all over the west that don't require a brutal training regimen to hunt. As long as you are in good shape and able to get over a couple ridges from most roads, finding deer or antelope is a non issue. Elk are a different story simply because of their size. I did see 2 other bucks that were about this size or a bit bigger. I kept my hikes to less than a half mile, used glass a lot and had no problems finding deer. PM me if you want some details. Good luck. Thanks for the compliments all. |

nice buck Evertsen,
If you don't mind me asking what area were you hunting? Not asking specifics just the area unit number. I have area 10 for next month. I wanted muzzleloader this year but had my uncle wanting to put in and he wanted rifle. I am hoping to see a decent buck this year. |

I got videos of the 6pt that was in velvet in the earlier pics. He still doesn’t have much mass, but his spread is crazy. Attached File

Muzzleloader Muley doe. 385 grain Hornady Great Plains bullets at 100 yards.
This is actually my first deer ever. I didn’t grow up in a hunting family, but learning to hunt has always been a dream of mine. After several close encounters and several passes on smaller deer, I was finally able to make it happen. My wife and I field dressed and quartered it together, then packed it about 3,000 feet in elevation down the mountain. When we got home, we butchered and processed everything ourselves. Had about as good of an opening weekend as I could have asked for. I just wanted to pop a doe to get some meat in the freezer, I'm saving my bucks for later in the year when it gets cooler and they are more active.
Opening morning I had a family of hogs come out. I popped the mom and she ran off and died about 20 yards away in a creek bottom. The babies came back and I got a shot off at one of them but my arrow hit a tree limb (they were off to the side not in my shooting hole) and missed. The next morning I hunted my second spot and was covered up in whitetail and blackbuck. I had a few younger bucks walking around and several smaller doe but I picked out a nice mature doe and made the shot right at sun up. After cutting her jaw out we aged her at 6.5 years old, very happy with that. All I can say is that Rage Broadheads are absolutely devastating. If you make a decent shot, you will have no issues tracking your animal (and they don't make it to far anyway). Its like someone took a gallon of red paint and just splashed it all over the ground. great opening weekend for bow season! Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Also, this thread once again reminds me that while Texas may have MORE deer than other places in the country, we certainly don't have the biggest.
Man some of you guys have some massive whitetails in your areas, JEALOUS! |

Meat in the freezer. Pressure is off. 2nd day hunting bow this year.
Unusual to see a doe with no skippers in tow. Had a reasonably long nose, so I attempted a shot at ~20ft, but the arrow came off the knock on the draw. She didn't notice until I drew a second time. This was at 35yds and the arrow went through the front of both shoulders. Was on my feet with the bow at my side listening to a deer splashing in the creek when she appeared in close. I need to get a hook at this stand--it'd save me hanging my finger over the arrow (to keep it from clanging about when I shift feet/raise the bow), and the resulting almost-disaster on my first draw attempt when it came off the knock. Also, it's nice having help that will show up in 30min when you hit one late afternoon. Dressed and dragged 150yds and had her loaded up in the Jeep 15 minutes after sundown. Temp stayed down in the 50's overnight--hung her up with a bag of ice in the chest cavity and butchered today after work. It'll be almost 80 here tomorrow. There's some definite downsides to killing early in bow season. If anyone knows of a good processor between Schaghticoke and Albany, send me a PM. Attached File |

No one has had any success since the 8th? I didn't get to hunt last weekend, but rifle season opens this Saturday. My daughter's birthday and my family reunion is the same day, but I'll still be in the stand that morning and that afternoon.
