Standby, let me make sure I posted the right pictures.  I have so many I may have screwed it up...

ETA - Yup, posted the wrong pictures.  OP corrected and replicated here.

okay so the mod case is pretty close to the hornady unfired case at 0.0005

And the hornady case is still growing by 0.003

I am curious to see how the rest of the 260 brass is sized in comparison.

SIDE NOTE: For me personally, I don't pay any attention to chamber pressure #'s from QL or any reloading manual when I'm loading for a gasser. Loads that will blow primers left and right and show serious signs of overpressure on brass when fired from a gasser are perfectly fine in my bolt guns. I think port pressure is the culprit, but with so many variables in gas system length, port diameter, number of ports, and dwell time, there's no hard and fast numbers to go by when loading for a gasser. I don't care what the reloading manuals say is safe as far as chamber pressure because port pressure will start causing issues long before chamber pressure will.

Back on topic, my practice load varies depending on what bullets I've got on hand, but I've had good results with the 120-123 class bullets, AMAX, ELD-M, and Custom Competitions, all using R16 around 42 grains. I use those light bullets because I usually have a good supply of them at the house, I shoot them through a shorty .260 Rem Tikka.

I think I might have found my grail load for the LaRue .260 today. I got a shipment in last week of the new Nosler 130 RDF bullets. Loaded up a rough test from 42 to 42.8gr of R16. 42gr stuck all 5 into .4". More important to me than the slight increase in accuracy was the significant reduction in felt recoil. The recoil impulse was soft and smooth as butter, and the brass came out looking like new. No ejector swipes, no cratered/flowing primers. Just clean brass. Same powder charge under a 130 Berger produces a completely different recoil impulse, and shitty accuracy. I can't explain it, but I sure as shit can feel it. Maybe the difference in the bearing surface length between the two bullets? I'm guessing velocity will be down around 2820, but the RDF has a higher BC than the Berger, so even if I do lose 70fps, at 1K it's a wash. I'll lose .2 in elevation, but gain .1 in wind resistance with a 10MPH full value wind, so nothing to worry about.

I've got 30 rounds of that load ready to go in fresh brass, I'll report back in after I shoot them. I'll chrono 10 and then shoot a 4x5 on a LaRue target.

I mean to respond to this, great info. I have not noticed any particular difference in felt recoil over the three bullets I have shot. ELD, AR Hybrid 130, and the Norma GT.

I'm waiting on the new scale and will work some loads across several bullets.  I may give the Nosler 123 custom comps another try as they didn't do too well the first time around.

It's not seeming like the flu yet. But I am tired as heck, woke up at 10am, splashed some water on the face, went and laid back down and woke up at 130. It's mostly cold symptoms

Here's my TPS report for the weekend.

I got some of the Berger 130 VLDs at a great price during the bullets.com going-out-of-business sale.

Here's pictures of the Berger 130gr Hybrid OTM versus the Berger 130gr VLD, with the WFL for comparison.  The numbers are the length of the projectile.

Do you notice that area in WFL right before the boat tail? It looks concave.

Like they did it to reduce bearing surface, or play with aero

Got out to do some shooting with a friend from Utah this weekend. The .260 was flawless as usual. The most notable shot was today’s cold bore hit at 1265 yards. 12.4 mil with 1.6 of left wind. Target is a 12”x 20” silhouette. Clay birds on a berm at 700 were a chip shot. I think I sold another rifle for Mark. Has anyone got their commission check yet? Oh yeah I was shooting against a 6br and a 6 creed. The 260 was victorious. I was shooting my 130 TMK load.

Its been a 308 for a year or so but I sold off all my 308 reloading components this weekend so the CM barrel went on.  Still need a muzzle break, can't decide since they're all pretty much the same.

You should expect a bit down and a bit to the right. It will vary based on the rifle and the ammo, but mine is 1.5MOA down with the Hornady, your mileage will vary.  Go shoot it and give us a range report with pictures please.

Well I know creating a small vortecies can support airflow over them while at the same time shaping that same airflow.

Look at the brighter band area that runs down the bearing surface. It's forward of the concave area and behind the ogive. It's on each projectile and not due to lighting.

Absolutely!  It's repeatable, true to zero and I've used the drop with consistency out to 1,000. It just happens to be 1.5 on the 260, it's less on my 7.62 and 6.5. I'm going to shoot this season pretty much with the TQ.

Nice report - thanks!  6br and 6 creed are great cartridges, were they shooting smaller so they could go faster?
They are impressive. I think my friend likes them due to lack of recoil.
Interesting. I think someone said in the .224 thread that the 260/6.5CM were developed because people wanted a softer recoil than the 7.62 and the 224 was developed because people wanted less recoil than the 260/6.5CM.

Today’s update is a bit early as it’s the 37th Anniversary today and HH6 wants to go out for dinner a bit later.

So, we’ve been through the weighing of brass to learn the level of consistency in the cartirdges. Most fell within a grain, which means some may have a different internal volume (best measured using total water capacity), which then could possibly translate to a variance in pressure (a kernel of powder), which could then translate to a difference in POI at range. The real question is whether that kernels difference is noticeable at 1,000 yards or if the shooter's mechanics (and wind reading) are a better focus.  I won't be weighing my brass in future.

Next was sorting bullets for weight and BTO (remember, I have lots of time on my hands). I sort for weight so I can touch every round to find the ones that are malformed and catch the ones that are out of norm for weight. I then sort for BTO so I can aid consistency in the seating process. Knowing, for example, I have a group of bullets that are a thousandth longer, allows me to adjust the click die by a thousandth so all the loaded rounds are consistent for BTO, and thus the jump to the lands on my rifle.

Here’s a scatter chart showing the dispersion of the 100 WFLs by weight, than then the remaining 98 for BTO (I culled one from each end of the spectrum).

I had hoped to move to a discussion on the seating process, but my 21st Century Hydro Press was abused by USPS and they somehow managed to lose the upright post that holds the mechanism.  So, I'm all dressed up with no place to go right now until 21st can send me the replacement part.

To me, and I could be wrong...that looks like where the collet grabs on at the cycle finish.

I do see bands in the bearing surface but I dont see any other features, at least nothing thats a deliberate dimension. Not saying its not there.

@esstac-

Your thread detailing the Tale of TWO-60s was archived. I hope you don't mind, but I pirated your reloading data and reposted it here since it was such good data.

Did you note seating depth on your differing loads?

From the original esstac- thread:

First day of shooting we worked on some loads and got the two UU's sighted in, was a balmy 32deg.

My first grouping, 41/41.5/42/42.5/43g of H4350 under a Hornady 130g ELD-M. With one that decided it did NOT want to be a part of the group.... @100y (measured in inches, not moa)

InfiniteGrim's First, Sierra 130g TMKs at 41/41.5/42/42.5/43g of H4350, @100y

Some load data, mostly greek to me. UUr is Infinites rifle, UUs is mine

Hornady 130g ELDM

Nosler 140g RDF

Sierra 130g TMK

All loads were 2.79, I will confirm later when I get to the shop.  Just normal mag length.
