I've had a taper lock Stealth and a taper blast can for all of 5 minutes, and I've already got them welded together.
I was dry fitting them on an upper, and decided to give them a good crank (by hand) to make sure the Stealth was on all the way. Now I can 't get the flash hider out of the can. I don't see a 3 tooth socket adapter like AAC sells, and I'm not ready to rockset or loctite the hider on a barrel, and I'm not sure I could if I wanted, as the wrench flats are inside the can. I've tried getting some leverage on the tines with a flat blade screwdriver, but so far no luck. On the good side, I now have absolutely no fear of my future taper mount Griffin cans coming off! |

Does it have a large flat mill out on the back face of the mount (part that contracts the shoulder)?

Nope. No annoying external features. Nice, clean design.
I tried putting a CAR stock wrench in a vise and used that to hold the tines. After accidentally turning it the wrong way, it's even more stuck. I'm also the proud owner of a slightly twisted CAR stock wrench. I put a drop of Kroil in the gap between hider and mount and am trying to ignore it till tonight or tomorrow. DOH!
I don't know which ones they started putting that milled slot in, hard to find stock pictures of that side of the muzzle device. What about heating up the blast can with a torch (carefully) or a heat gun? |

I'm going to let the kroil work its magic and see if I can find something better to brace the FH teeth against.
It looks like I can use a cheap CAR wrench on the scalloping on the can. That will give me some more leverage. All I need to do is find something good to hold the tines. I hope. |

@Amish_Bill
That's super shitty. I'm sorry about that. How did you get that muzzle device? We have put a slot in all of them for 6 years or more. That slot interacts with a geometry found on our spanner wrenches and AR15 armorers tool. If that isn't really old, maybe you got a bad unit made after an endmill broke and someone didn't notice it was gone? We used to tell people red loctite it on a barrel- wait 10 minutes and remove the device, then unscrew the mount from the gun. If that doesn't work, try 15 or 20 minutes max. |

I picked those up from a guy who had changed course and didn't use them. I'm not sure how long he had them or which era / revision they are from. All I can say is that they're clean, new(ish) and pleasing to the eye.
Red loctite for just long enough to get it half set, then pull and clean as soon as the deflector comes off eh? I can handle that. I think I'll go grab a small strap wrench first. I really don't want to be unable to separate it from the hider once the hider is on tight enough to not spin off in the attempt. Until then, I'll keep working it with Kroil and whatever improvised tools I can come up with. |

We have an armorers tool that can be put on the Recce rear geometry, but the strap wrench should work. Those really old taper mounts had flats cut into the tapers, and on those it's important not to deform those with a wrench or they can score a taper. Hand installed, I doubt you did that. This is probably not that tight in there unless you spun it onto a barrel and tightened it good. https://www.griffinarmament.com/silencer-armorers-tool-kit/ |

I cranked on it to get the hider tighter on the barrel, but only with my soft REMF hands.
Thanks for the link. I've got that tool in my cart for when I've finally admitted I need the help. |

SUCCESS
I put one stock wrench in a vice, jammed it up the FH's Bonus Hole, wrapped it up for safety, and had my way with a second wrench at the other end. Attached File I'm happy this worked. I want to use it on what looks like a 7" barrel in a 7" rail. The (Recce?) profile slides in there perfectly. I hope the Explorr has the same rear profile... Attached File Attached File |

No you have a good unit as far as flats. Just lacking the current production slot in the back that would get you out of this a lot easier.
Make sure you torque that 45-55FT lbs prior to installing the muzzle device in the mount so it doesn't become stuck in the mount. The taper is 15 degrees that's a semi-locking taper. As opposed to locking which means permanent installation every time, unless the tapers were only beat together with no threads like morse tapers. |

My next question was going to be about proper mounting.
I'm assuming that's a dry 45-55 ft lbs - no rockset or LT Blue or Uncle Bob's Homebrew Wonder SnotTM on it? Note to Self - Measure flats on various muzzle devices and start shopping for crows-foot adapters for my torque wrench. |

I'm going to assume for 5/8, 45ft/lbs is the target, and 55 is the border of Thar Be Dragons territory? Taper Mount Installation and Maintenance Tutorial |

Those are good specs. I sometimes run 1/2x28 to 40 or so if we are going to be rodding the piss out of the can, but that might be superstitious.
I have never accounted for particular material in the specs. I have never noticed an issue. For an example of really odd specs, we put 80 ft lbs on the 240 FN threads for going cyclic for a minute. That worked well. I took my que from the massive torque required to get the OEM device off. |

View Quote I often use an armorer’s tool that I ground a bit thinner with a grinding wheel, because it was ironically a bit thick on regular A2s with crush washers and would stick on the crush washer. The Griffin tool fits on my torque wrench without having to use an adapter like I have to use on my armorer’s tool. It also opens beverages or pops stubborn takedown pins. |
