bfoosh06, thanks a ton for the great write up and for answering my numerous IM's and helping me out tremendously.
I built my rifle very similar to yours: PA10 Gen2 Criterion Barrel 18" Mid-Length 1 in 10 twist, Parkerized Chrome lined Part Number: 10180-HYM SLR Sentry 7 Adjustable Gas block (Melonite Finish) Part Number: SA7-SM & Dimpling Jig KAK 9.3oz Heavy Buffer Tubbs Flatwire Spring Full length tube w/Magpul MOE Rifle Stock Seekins Precision ATC Muzzle Brake Geissele SD-E 2 stage trigger Nikon Black X-1000 4-16x50 The rifle performed exactly like bfoosh06 described. To determine the proper gas block setting, I closed the gas block, loaded 1 round in a Magpul P-mag and fired the round. At 6 clicks the bolt locked back consistently without incident and it performed flawlessly at that setting across 7 different types of ammo tested. I did not test ZQ1 however. As mentioned, that may require 1 additional click. The SLR Gas block, Tubbs Spring, and KAK Heavy buffer made a dramatic difference from beating my shoulder to death to recoiling much softer. It's still very noticeable when bench resting but when firing from a standing or kneeling position, feels like I'm shooting my AR15. At the range, I wasn't the most steady as could be as I am still getting a feel for the rifle. That being said, my groups were representative of my abilities. I snaked the barrel every 10 rounds and allowed it to cool down somewhat and am certain would get better groups if shooting cold bore with each. I don't have hosting so don't have pics to post but here is the ammo I tested in the order of how well it shot: 175gr FGMM, 168gr Ultramax, 168gr FMMG 1 time factory reloads, Federal 150gr Fusion, Federal 165gr Fusion, Hornady 150gr White Tail, Federal XM80 The factory Stainless barrel made 2.5-3" groups, with the 175gr and the Criterion barrel made groups that were touching. The most suprising for me was the 168gr. Ultramax, these are factory once reloaded brass and they outshot eveything but the 175gr GMM In conclusion, adding the SLR Adjustable gas block, Tubbs Flatwire Spring, and KAK Heavy buffer made the rifle pleasant to shoot. The addition of the Criterion barrel made it highly accurate and fun. I have shot AR10's worth north of $2K and I dare say that this rifle shot as good if not better than some of those. The PA10 Gen2 is a reliable platform right out of the box and for a few hundred more, it can be incredibly accurate also! Again, special thanks to bfoosh06 for being so willing to help out. I know you've helped a bunch of on here save time, $$$, and frustration getting this platform figured out and dialed in. |

I am Always willing to give my 2 cents ! I am glad the heavy buffer, Tubbs spring and SLR gas block helped so much. Your description is right on the money.... much softer shooting and even with all my ammo fired, it doesn't miss a beat. I am surprised more people don't add the heavy stuff.... it makes a day at the range much more pleasant. There is a learning curve for a .308 AR, so after you find the most accurate ammo for your barrel.... you will be able to fully focus on your bench learning curve... You will be able to easily tell if you flubbed the shot , rather then wondering if it was the ammo. Enjoy that rifle... it will be a trusted friend for years. Thank you for all the kind words... bfoosh006 |

10-4, just ordered one from Brownells. Thank you for the tips and info in this thread. Quoted:

Quoted: Installed the SLR gas block last week, and tuned it this weekend. Seemed like the sweet spot for my suppressed PA10 (with a YHM Phantom 7.62) was position 5 from closed. Looking forward to continuing to increase the round count on it. Did the SLR seem to help with the blowback from the suppressor ? |
|
Quoted: 5-6 clicks from closed is where I have mine set... I am interested in the suppressor aspect. Did the SLR seem to help with the blowback from the suppressor ?

Quoted: Unfortunately I can't say. I only shot about 10 rounds suppressed about a month ago so I didn't have a very good perspective. I can say I didn't notice any unpleasant blowback. I was more focused on whether the rifle was reliable as I was shooting it. I'm kind of a simpleton that way ![]() |

Thank you much for taking the time and effort posting your experiences and tips. Very informative on the PA10! I just recently got my Gen 2 stainless 18" midlength, w/nickel boron BCG and will be checking it out after cleaning, burnishing parts later this week. I plan on adding the Magpul ACS-L next and later SLR adjustable gas block and Tubbs flat wire. --The correct buffer weight, receiver extension length is probably my biggest concern. I'll most likely pm you on that concern in the future. First I only need to get out and shoot this rifle. For now I'll try ZQI, Hornady Match 168 BTHP, Hornady Match 168 A-max, HSM 168 Hornady A-max, AE 7.62x51 168 OTM, Hornady Match 155 A-max Palma and Superformance Match 168 A-max I'll definitely need to order some of that surplus ammo that's grouping well. Keep up the good work, I'm also interested in your PA65 upper findings. Thanks again Bishop3 |

Bishop3... IM sent And these are the parts I used for the Carbine stocked version... LR-308 CARBINE HEAVY BUFFER... Primary Arms sells it as well, same price. https://www.kakindustry.com/lr-308-parts/308-lower-parts/lr308-carbine-buffer-heavy . Tubbs .308 Flatwire recoil spring http://www.davidtubb.com/ar10-tubb-parts/bufferspring-sr-ar10 . SLR adjustable Gas Block... Do yourself a favor.. and get a spare Middie gas tube and roll pin.... those things are a SOB to remove. ( All from SLR website, currently on sale ) .400 spacing Ad. GB http://slrrifleworks.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=124 8" 2MM Ball driver... MUCH easier to use then the supplied 2MM driver. http://slrrifleworks.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=94 .750 Dimpling Jig.... the new Improved more options one. "5 spacing for blocks with .400" .425" .450" .470" and .500" center to center".... SOOOO measure twice cut once !!! I watched the install video while dimpling my barrels ( Vimeo video towards the bottom of the link )... every time. Shot my PA10 Gen2 18" SS midlength bone stock today after a cleaning and good lube. Used one PMAG25 LR/SR. Tough heavy not smooth hand cycling. Started with MKE ZQI to get a 1-6x Vortex SE zeroed @50 yards (I'm going to eventually mount a Vortex PST). I need supporting bags and didn't have but makseshift support, needless to say the ZQI didn't group well, several failures to feed and no bolt hold open for about first 30 rounds then maybe the rifle loosened up and no more FTF and bolt locked back. HSM 168 A-max tightened up some groups about 2.5 inches. The winner was Hornady Match 168 BTHP with less than 1 inch groupings @50 yds. Wasn't impressed with the EPT trigger (heavy pull weight) but haven't tried the paracord trick yet either. I do like Geissele triggers and have a few in other rifles so an SSA-E trigger may be in the future. I wanted to expend the last 20 of the 60 rounds of the ZQI I had & did that on 12" steel @400 got a 'few hits'. So when finances allow I plan to do these upgrades; SLR adjustable GB, Tubbs flatwire spring, LR-308 buffer, Magpul ACS-L and add an Silencerco ASR brake. From what I saw with just the Hornady Match BTHP I'm not anticipating another barrel just yet. With the upgrades and better suited optics, *bags, I believe this rifle can be a great shooter. Once upgraded I'll report back. pic of my best group of the day: Attached File 'Did I mention recoil, kicked like a mule'. Bishop3 |

The buffer springs and tubes are same OAL as AR15 carbine parts.... but the .308 buffer is shorter and the 308 buffer spring is thicker. Buffers as shown... AR15 carbine buffer, PSA OEM PA10 Carbine buffer, KAK HvyWt .308 carbine buffer 5.5oz that I will be trying out ( I prefer my rifles to have mild recoil impulses. ) And I really need to say again.... this rifle was bone dry.... so prior to shooting your PA10.... at the VERY least, field strip and lube thoroughly. More to come.... including after the OEM configuration test firing, my add on's..... PRS Gen 3 w/ rifle length buffer tube and HvyWt KAK 308 9.3oz rifle length buffer, LaRue Trigger, Tubbs Flatwire spring, maybe a SLR adjustable gas block, etc. I don't know if all those parts are compatible yet. |

I bought this upper:
PA-10 upper So pardon my ignorance, but if I put an SLR adjustable gas block on it, is the SLR block hidden by the hand guard? What about a Magpul MOE hand guard or the MOE SL? Thanks for this thread, and all of your work you put into it! ETA: I have a Primary Arms 4-14 power scope on it. |

I know you used a KAK 9.3 oz buffer, a tubs 308 flat wire recoil spring along with a Magpul PRS stock. What buffer tube did you go with not the PSA stock one right? . I replaced it with a PSA rifle length buffer tube. from PSA , It has served well... and that is what I use today. |

I have the 18" nitride upper. Just want to tame recoil some. Not wanting to replace gas block. Would a heavier buffer and better spring do enough?
My lower is the Pa10 buffer tube and 3.8 oz H buffer. What about the capture springs from JP and Armaspec? This will be an unsuppressed rifle only. |

To heavy a spring and your cyclic mass will be slamming forward to hard, and causing the muzzle to dip and other unwanted stuff... and you can only go "so" heavy in a .308 Carbine stock, without spending a decent chunk of change. I tried the "mass overkill" in the PSA carbine stock... didn't work the ample and excessive gas volume just over powered the added mass and extra spring rate. An adjustable GB is fairly inexpensive... and honestly far easier to install then most people realize and expect. Rather then buy a heavier buffer and recoil spring I would most certainly recommend an Adjustable Gas Block. . Ultimately the ample volume of gas is the reason for the cycling mass is being so pesky.... so unless that is limited / restricted... not much else will be anywhere near as noticeable. If you want the most efficient and cost effective solution... an Adjustable gas block is your best bet. I run mine at 6 clicks from closed... of the available 15 clicks. If you can change a tire on your car... you can install an adjustable GB. |

Appreciate all the info. Just recieved my 18" SS upper today and waiting for my background check to clear to pick up my lower (Damn delays...) First thing I did was replace the gas block with my adjustable syrac ordance one and repalce the flash hider with my YHM QD one to run my suppressor. I'm hoping for minute of deer... lol |

After a Tubbs flatwire spring and AKTIV buffer I shot mine today - suppressor attached to ASR muzzle break mount. Every 2-4 rounds it would fail to extract feeding another round. Seemed like too much back pressure.
I guess I'm stubborn and thought the gun might run suppressed. Now It seems I will be installing my first adjustable gas block I was recommended. Good news is without the can it functioned fine with noticeably less recoil, accuracy was good. Im pleased with this rifle for the money, it is a good value. I'll be upgrading the trigger eventually. I've added the Magpul ACS-L and MIAD grip in OD green. Attached File |

Soooo.... I bought another complete PA10 lower.... is has a longer carbine buffer tube, a regular AR15 length buffer, and a longer buffer spring then my first PA10 lower. I haven't measured them yet... but is sure looks like a Armalite .308 length buffer system. So... prior to any purchasing of buffer parts, I strongly suggest you post photos of what actually came with your rifle. The "new" longer length buffer tube is marked "PA10" with the PSA "Logo" as well ... the buffer is AR15 length ( no markings ) as hand compared to a spare AR15 carbine buffer I have laying around. Here are some side by side photos for comparison...the "New" sized buffer system is on the left. The older "DPMS" style buffer systems is on the right. I am now wondering how many times the different ones have been used... and how many times it may have caused mayhem and confusion. |
|
Quoted:
Gonna do that after the sun comes up. Still surprised to see the change... I wish PSA had used this length in the first place. And it should be spelled out on the webpage as to which buffer tube length is being used. fwiw |

Quoted: I have more than one PA10, most recent one just before Christmas. All of them came with 3.89oz buffer, 3 1/4" long (same as AR15), tube though is 7 1/2-7 5/8 on the inside. Same orange buffer tip. Recoil spring is about 10 1/2 and 37 turns. There's a couple of ebay sellers that have the tungsten weights to make it an H3 that is a lot cheaper than buying an H3. fwiw My original one is from Dec. 2016... that one came with the shorter DPMS Carbine Buffer system. The current one is now using a Armalite type setup. That will cause needless confusion when people ask for help with the buffer system.... especially since they are in NO WAY interchangeable parts wise. There are benefits to a longer buffer system... ( heavier buffer ) ... but to do this mid-stream, is , well... again, silly..... Talk about "eschew obfuscation".. Geez |
|
Here are the measured weights and lengths between the "New" and "Older" versions.
Again, remember these parts do not interchange... unless you the complete buffer system ( DPMS v. Armalite ) New / Armalite / Longer.......................... Older / DPMS / Shorter Supplied OEM PSA buffer ............ ( Both are way to light IMHO, they should be min. 5.4oz ) .....3.8oz / OAL 3.260"...................................3.8oz / OAL 2.5" Supplied OEM PSA Buffer Tube...... .....5.0oz / OAL 7 7/8" ..................................5.0oz / OAL 7 1/4" Supplied OEM PSA Buffer Spring..... ......1.5oz / OAL 11 3/8" / 29coils..................1.5oz / OAL 10 5/8" / 28coils Difference between the two, in the fully compressed spring / buffer / BCG bottomed out in the buffer tubes using the supplied parts.... the "New" Buffer system is 3/32 longer and will not compress as short as the old one.... so if you are having Bolt catch issues... this is possibly why. The depth of the "New" buffer tube is 7 11/16" Again the "New" buffer system length is a better choice IMHO , allowing for more common parts and a heavier buffer weight.... However.... changing mid-stream is bound to confuse the subject. |

Quoted: I could be wrong, but from the close up pic of the springs you posted a couple posts above, the spring on the right looks to maybe have slightly thicker "wire', than the one on the left. Again hard to tell for sure from pic., but could this be a possibility? You'd have to measure the diameter with a caliper or micrometer to tell. If they are, I do still see where the length makes a difference with different tubes and for the bolt etc., but the springs themselves may have a very similar or even same compression rate, without knowing the spec's of the springs themselves though it's hard to say for sure, but again if the lengths are different it prob wont matter anyways if there's an issue with the bolt working properly cause if it. When ordering the tubbs flat wire spring, do you suggest measuring the spring that you have first, or is it best to just replace the tube at same time as ordering the spring? And with my MOE collapsible stock will that still work on different tubes than what mine came with? Here is my exact lower I have. http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-gen2-pa10-complete-moe-miad-lower-receiver-black-516445105.html As for the Tubbs .308 Flatwire, ....one of the better features is the Flatwire itself... it compresses shorter then any conventional round wire spring possibly could, and as such is GTG in everything. I originally tried it in my "Short" OEM PSA buffer tube, with the 2.5" tiny .308 carbine buffer and... it worked perfectly. So bottom line ... Tubbs Flatwire works in the........ "Short" DPMS carbine buffer system, the "Longer" Armalite carbine buffer system, and the Rifle length .308 buffer system. Remember, the DPMS and Armalite terms are more of a "this manufacturer uses this and that manufacturer uses that". It even gets more confusing, buffer tube wise.. Lol ( I'll leave that for a different thread since it does not apply at all here. ) I will try to take a photo of the various AR15 ( .223 /5.56 ), and the 9MM and .308 AR buffer systems tomorrow We were all confused about stuff like that at one point or another. .. Also the "Standard Heavy Carbine Buffer" that you have ( 3" long ) isn't heavy... lol 3.0oz is a basic carbine buffer weight. I would take the 3" buffer apart and swap all the weights with Tungsten.... be sure to "note" the order of the fiber disc's, for reassembly. ( take a photo or write it down ) If you are not comfortable doing that, Just buy a H3 buffer. I also suggest grinding off a little on the inside/ top of the "bolt release paddle".... mine left a mark on the upper because of the tight fit. Anddddd.... buy one of these...you will like it FAR more then the MOE recoil pad.... MUCH softer. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003242966/limbsaver-recoil-pad-prefit-magpul-moe-ctr-stock-rubber-black |

I got my PA10 upper in last week. I took the rail off today and sure enough, the gas tube was touching. A little time with the grinder and that problem is fixed.
I spent a little time cleaning and lubing and the upper should be ready to go. Lower should be in tomorrow so I will give it some love too. |

Quoted: Nice. Post up your results please. I don't know when I'll get out to the range as it seems KY is having Monsoon season lately but here she is. Still have to level and tighten the scope mount once I get it on the benchrest. Attached File Question- I bought this lower and it is supposedly a Gen2 but it has the standard length buffer tube and a short 3.8 oz buffer that is normal color, not anodized. Does this seem correct? |

Good looking rifle. And... if that ADM mount is like a LaRue mount... Be sure to tighten the bottom ring screws first, making good / solid contact with the base... then do the top screws. The bottom screws need to be tight against the base so the entire rings don't shift on the base.. https://www.larue.com/page/instructions/ |

Does anyone know what a PSA H3 Buffer weighs? I have one on hand and was thinking I probably will use it on my lower I pick up Monday. It is a PSA GenII PA-10 going under a PA-65 upper. This upper already has a adjustable GB. Tuesday I will have a short range report.
