Its strange there is very little excitement on these but for maybe 3 people.
I think of it this way......... Add a brand new Colt M4 lower to this upper and you got a Colt Carbine so rare that only 16-20 people own. Not only rare in release numbers but rare in that they (uppers) have proof they were part of a TRIALS for a foreign military. The collectability factor is off the charts IMO. Mine sits at the local UPS facility since they don't deliver on Sat. I am very excited. |

I haven't had much time to really participate in the conversation here because the traditional weekend Soldiers in my unit have duty this weekend and I have been crazy busy. Having said that I should have some time tonight.
I agree that the offering being just an upper receiver has probably detracted from interest. In the traditional Colt collectors market, complete firearms have been the thing. The 'collectability' of an upper receiver assembly is really a new thing and this offering is on the leading edge of that. Future value of these is yet to be determined. I am writing an article for the Colt Collectors Association with the intent of creating a historical record of this offering which will validate future market presence of these uppers and capture historical context. The Colt Decommissioned M45A1's were a market anomaly and considered rare at just 1000 pistols being released. If the collectability of an upper receiver assembly gains market acceptance, having one of these sixteen upper receivers is exceptional and almost like owning a unicorn in the Colt AR market. But, like I said, we are on the leading edge of a yet unestablished collector realm.....upper receiver assemblies. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I will try to show barrel widths tonight. Would love to hear the thoughts of others... |

Since they were never offered for sale as a complete carbine due to restricted lowers, this helps with the collectability of "just an upper".
16-20 is a damn LOW number. I will also say this........ I believe IMO the Colt mags in 7.62X39 offered have nothing to do with the trials in any way. I believe they are just NOS stuff Colt was releasing to a couple of vendors. |

I've really been torn on this offering since the thread started.
On one hand, I'm 64 yrs old (rather than a 20- or 30-something) and can see this upper going for $300 or so when I kick the bucket and it gets auctioned off locally. It really surprises me that the AU website appears to have been stuck at 10 units left for several days now. I would expect more interest from the Colt-dedicated portion of this website. On the other hand, my Colt AR's are the closest thing I have in my modest gun collection to concentrating on a particular manufacturer/model. This would be a nice addition to that collection. Ultimately, I'll probably get one. It might just take a few extra Heineken's to convince me.

This is the best I seem to be able to do. :-/ An additional detail is that the flash hider on the India upper is not an 'A2' style flash hider. It has 6 ports around the circumference. |

On the mags..........
I received a few and they are OLD. NOT USED, but not new. They could never pass for new. Anodizing is worn and they appear to be something that Colt found in a old box somewhere in their warehouse. Limiter can be removed by removing rivet in floor plate with small drill, then pressing in retainer then sliding off floor plate then removing the limiter. I know 7 rounds work from use many years ago. I wouldn't be shocked if someone says they got 10 to work. 5-7 work and Colt decided on 5 for best performance. |

I have to say that AU packaged the upper very, very, poorly!
I had no damage or any ill effects. Luckily. Just the box inside a plastic bag mailer with zero padding. Not how a $1000 item should ever be shipped! That Colt blue and white box is not a shipping box. AU I ask that you please stop this asap and put a outer box on them. Ive ordered Colt uppers from a few of the larger places and they were always packaged properly. |

On the boxes.......
It looks like at least 8 uppers were never made available to the public. So there is a good chance you will never be able to acquire your numbered box. Numbers don't really mean much, uppers were probably un-boxed in India and then re-boxed with absolutely no care to match them. That being said..... I have BOX 16 I want BOX 24 |

I have BOX 16 I want BOX 24 We all know that Colt is cleaning house of random stuff and raising cash. My belief is that this is just a continuation of that process. AU bought the product as is from Colt. I would be willing to bet that they simply passed the upper receivers on to us in the condition that they were received. As collectors we always hope for things to be pristine and perfect but we have to be careful to not let our hopes cloud our accepting of the reality of some of this stuff being brought to the light of day and sold to us. From what I had learned, there were only 20 uppers in the testing program. A few of those stayed with Colt employess and the balance went to AU. The existence of label #24 is interesting. I will see what I can find out. |
