If so, what way your process? Rust test? I'm curious if anyone has seen rust on these black oxide uppers? Have people actually taken the rail off to oil? Could you just spray oil down the outside of the barrel and let the excess drip off? I'm could go either way order one or wait it out? Building URGI upper seems like the more expensive option and a 100% clone is not that important to me.. |

Put it into the safe and just checked on it. Looks good as new. Everyone I see worried or complaining about it either doesn’t own one or they haven’t took it out and used the rifle. |

Quoted: I just ordered one of the mag phosphate nitride barreled SD's from Brownells. I've also got a newer black oxide SD for another customer. Going to do a side by side rust test for science. What kind of test? I’m interested to see the results. Oh and like said above it’s either nitride or mag phosphate, not both. |

You are going to rust test a customer’s barrel? What oil are you going to treat the phosphate with prior to the test? Will you do the same to the BO? |

Geissele's website says "nitride" on their gray ones w/nitride barrel. Quoted: You are going to rust test a customer’s barrel? What oil are you going to treat the phosphate with prior to the test? Will you do the same to the BO? I've already cleared it with them (a friend of mine), I'm not planning to bury them or anything. Likely shoot a few rounds through each, wipe off excess oil from the factory and do a light coat of CLP and wife off excess, tape off a small area on each barrel, spray/spritz with tap water, and let it sit for a few days/maybe a week. One guy on Reddit showed me a pic of his rusty barrel but wouldn't get into use/storage conditions. Big difference between a few days in the rain and a few days in the rain then tossed into a pelican case wet for 6 months. Figure most people aren't going to leave them sitting outside long term but will be out in the rain at the range, or multiple day training course, or camping. I've seen some rust on small parts like safeties, takedown pins, G rail bolts/screws just from condensation of being outside all night. Any rust that does develop should be easily removed with steel wool and oil. So far people explain that black oxide is a cheap tool finish, and maybe it is, but does it work? And maybe is just people being angry about a "less costly" finish and the price stayed the same. Either way, I'm about to find out, as soon as my rifle ships from brownells. I do get being upset about switching the finish without updating the descriptions, but I'm wondering if its a case of internet outrage or if the new finish is justifiably bad. ETA: Brownells order shipped. Should arrive Monday. So I'll get this process started next week once I get it in hand. |

I received my URG-I near clone the other day and you know, Geissele and the oil. I swear, they must have a tank of oil that is part of the packing/shipping process. Well as I always do, I wiped all of the oil off but my ocd wouldn’t keep me from removing the rail and wiping off the oil on the barrel. I should’ve taken pictures and now that I’m thinking about it, I will. Not sure when, but I will. Anyways, I was surprised by the finish on the barrel. Totally shocked. It looks phenomenal, like much better than phosphate. You know how with phosphate it always looks as though it was thrown around and scuffed up a little? I’ve seen black oxide parts before and this is truly different some how. The coverage and uniformity are near perfect if not perfect. It has a slight sheen or satin look to it. And that’s after all of the oil was removed with a microfiber towel. I have no doubt that it’ll be fine. And that the majority of this is internet outrage. Almost every gun if left in a humid environment will rust eventually. I do plan to watch it over time and apply some oil from time to time but I have a feeling the outrage is for nothing. Because I already torqued the rail down, I’ll attempt to get photos with it on, but if not I’ll have to wait until my first range trip with the upper |

The black is in keeping with the amazing finish of the Luna Black. I would prefer a traditional Parkerizing for the URGi (still waiting so dont have one). |

DDC not as much. Should get mine this week. Work has been slammed and I haven't been home for packages. |

Quoted: I noticed only the 16" Super Duty uppers/rifle/pistols on the Geissele website show black oxide barrels in the descriptions now. The rest have "Manganese Phosphate coated" in the description. This is the Super Duty 14.5 rifle I received last month. The 2nd pic is the top 1/4" of the barrel with the oil removed. Is this the new mag phos finish? I like it. https://i.imgur.com/aemKxfW.jpg https://i.imgur.com/5v2JNYJ.jpg |
| I bought an ODG Super Duty 11.5" in Nov 2020 (08-218ODG, with an asymmetric Cam Pin I didn't expect) NIB off a private sale so not sure when it was actually made, but am curious how to determine which finish I got for the sake of maintenance. The barrel color's a bit lighter than the gas block and closed-tine Warcomp, and I always assumed it was mag phos, but are there any markings etc that would confirm? Could it be nitride instead? |

I'd bet your is nitride. My post from my other thread: Quoted: Do you have the box? Or pic of the box label? The Geissele part number for nitride and BO are different. For instance: 16" BO Luna black is 08-188LB, Nitride is 08-318LB. |

Quoted: Yea that doesn't look bad at all. It looks like the unicorn Green Parkerizing. It’s hard to get it that shade deliberately. To me, Parker rising makes a very, very, very good primer coat for Norells moly or KG gunkote. Especially any barrel that goes under a rail, get the above treatment from me. Guaranteed not to rust. |
|
Quoted: Mag phos 16 inch barrels will be updated on Monday. -GACS Are all barrels mag phosphate now? I was looking to pick one of the 14.5 super duties next time around and noticed this on the description. in-house 14.5” Manganese Phosphate coated, Cold Hammer Forge, Chrome Lined, 1-7 twist Geissele barrel. |
|
Quoted: I don't suppose you could tell me what kind of barrel an 11.5" 08-218ODG has? Or if that's even determinable by model number? I wager its nitride based on my previous post. Even so, I haven't oiled my BO barrel since my dip in the pond in December. still no rust. Y'all are making a mountain out of a mole hill about the finish. |

Quoted: It’s still sealed in the factory plastic. Then it certainly hasn’t rusted. What are you worried about? Seems like the only people worried about this don’t shoot them, but if there is a genuine issue it’d be nice to know. I’d like to buy a 16” Super Duty but just missed the Memorial Day sale. If they come back at $1580 I’ll grab one - and I hope they are mag phos as I’m a bit of a traditionalist. |
|
Quoted: Just compared my brand new G super duty to my buddies who has one of the first batch made. Mine is black oxide and very obvious once you compare the two. I ordered from Brownell's which shows this: https://i.imgur.com/gOTDhUk.png I'm not very pleased to received a product different from what I ordered. @GACS Any chance you can take care of this? Why is the operator type guy in your avatar using a pistol brace? |

I’m obviously new to the forum and I find it incredibly entertaining how passionate the feelings are towards this surface finish. I just bought mine in April and it had a beautiful, even mag phos finish with just the right amount of greenish hue. As a matter of fact, it’s so beautiful, maybe I would be disappointed if I was stuck with BO or Nitride… Anyways, it’s nice to see Geissele clearly responding to customer preferences. I do think the Surefire CTFH on mine has some kind of weird finish that may be BO, but the underlying steel is stainless so I reckon that won’t hurt anything. |
