SO the property taxes are they from the prior year? we are selling my moms house and i got the tax bill. do i pay it and the lawyer figures it all out at closing?

Depends on your town.  When I bought my house years ago, I had to pay a prorated amount to cover what the previous owner had paid for the remainder of that tax period.  My taxes are due in the first month and cover the next year(July-June).

If your closing is done properly, that money should make its way back to the seller.  If you don’t close before the tax due date, I would imagine you need to pay up.

Pay them on time. make sure to let your lawyer know you paid them. The buyer will pay you at the closing for any taxes you paid after the sale date. Also you typically get paid for any heating oil in the tank.
