I saw threads like this on other websites, so I though it would be cool to do one for Idaho. Post your stories and the location where it happened if possible.

My buddy and I were hunting elk in unit 53 last winter. There was a lot of snow on the ground, making it dead silent, we were walking through the sage brush and heard a loud long whistle. I sounded like half a cat-call, it definitely sounded like a person making it. We were kinda freaked out but kept walking. We then found a single, fresh, large boot print in the snow. (the snow was fresh so it had to only have been a hour or so old) We looked around but couldn't see anyone. We kept hunting but both had the feeling we were being watched the entire time.

I've spent a lot of time in the desert south of the airport; Pleasant Valley Rd. from where it turns to dirt all the way to the Snake River.  I have found a number of small random military-type stuff.  back-up iron sights, AR mags (full and empty), ammo cans, partial belts of both 7.62, 5.56, .50, canteens, un-exploded ordinance (left there for obvious reasons), 20 mm casings from the Apache's, airplane/helicopter crash parts (there are a few crash sights out there, dating back to WW2), old Indian arrowheads, etc...

There is a great B-23 Dragon crash site at Look Lake you can hike to; its well worth it to check it out.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else I've run across.

Lame, I know.

Loon Lake crash site is awesome. The story behind it is even more so.

Man, I need to hang out with you guys.

Weirdest thing I have seen was a group of about 8 folks on ATVs up in the Payette.  About 5 bottles of water between them, no food, no GPS, no map.  About 5 miles from where they thought they were and really confused.

Seemed really concerned that the folks in my party were armed.

I'd tell you where they were from, might ruin the surprise.

Found this little guy out south of Boise while blasting whistle pigs.

Keep your heads down out there.

It wasn't in Idaho, but I "found" a rather large bull moose dead in a meadow alongside a trail in the Uintah's in northeast Utah about 10 years ago.  It had been there awhile with some snowfall and cold weather, but it was starting to get a little bit funky.

.50 cal story:  Gold nugget prospecting with a metal detector near Ft. Irwin.  It’s a good area for small nuggets.  Hit a good signal.  Dug down 6 inches, still good signal.  9 inches, great signal.  Note that below 6 inches almost all of the man made metal is gone (pull tabs, boot nails coins, etc.)  15 inches, getting stronger.  I’m thinking huge nugget.  2 feet (that’s a lot of digging folks) nice .50 cal bullet.  Damn!  Some WWII pilot must have been busting coyotes in the desert for fun.

I went near the top of the foothills North of Boise to admire the view.  I smelled something funny and looked down.  Right at my feet was a rotting doe.

Same area near Orchard Training Area S Boise, my kids found a buried ammo can full of linked 7.62 blanks.  Can was rough but blanks were fine. Put a few through my FAL that has a BFA.

On some pretty tight technical single track.  10ish miles from any road or anything large enough for a fourwheeler to get up.  Found a kitchen sink complete with matching cupboards in the middle of the forest.  Set nicely along the trail.

I'd guess some outfitter packed that in by mule for their hunting camp and just leaves it there through the off season.

Just across the border South of Coeur d'Alene near Mica Peak I went into a tight knot of cedar where I thought a spring was. Bobcat, just barely warm, laying at my feet. Like 40+ pounds of kitty.

Heart started pumping again when I realized, He's dead Jim.

From the looks of it, he took 3-4 thru-and-thru small caliber non-vital hits, across the chest, rear leg, and a grazed neck. I searched 360* and no blood trail.

I was after a 4pt I saw earlier (that unit is devoid of 3pt min bucks) and didn't want the blood scent on me, so I left it. Should have just skinned it out and sold the teeth, hide and claws on the Rez.

Last fall, hunting just west of the WA/ID border, we drove up to a peak where there is a bunch of cell towers and a couple power shacks.

I stop to piss and look down and say to myself
"Those are some funny looking rocks. Those rocks have eyes and ears. Wtf?!"

Under the tree were the heads of 6 mule deer fawns.
Clearly cut off by a person.

If you're gonna poach, why would you put the remains at the only frequently visited spot for miles?
We called the game warden and let him know. Never heard back from him about it.
