hello all,

So i am considering freeing myself from New Jersikstan and one of the places that has recently popped on my radar is LV. i live in a beautiful suburb of NJ and love most of it here, but winters are starting to get to me and the politics and people are also. so what attracts me to vegas is weather, cost and no real loss of culture (plenty of shows, shopping and food in LV). so here is a list of questions that i hope some of you can help out with:

1, any crazy gun laws or restrictions i have to look out for?
2, pocket knife laws?
3, how is the motor vehicle inspection (i have a modded car, cats still on but they are 100 cell race cats). is there any inspection for motorcycles
4, this may be silly but what new critters and crawlers am i going to encounter?
5, how is crime? personal and property?
6, what areas of the city are a no go as far as where to look? i have been looking at the summerlin, henderson and lone mountain areas
7, how is the town/state towards small business?
8, how is the medical community/facilities
9, anything you think to bring up that i am not thinking of?

Not yet. Should be ok this go around for our Legislature. No 80% guns unless you find a SOT to engrave a ser #.

2, pocket knife laws?
Not really. There are laws on the books but not enforced.

3, how is the motor vehicle inspection (i have a modded car, cats still on but they are 100 cell race cats). is there any inspection for motorcycles
Smog checks are required. There is an age on these which you may be exempt.

4, this may be silly but what new critters and crawlers am i going to encounter?
Scorpions.

5, how is crime? personal and property?
Not bad. Urban area and plenty of places to avoid. Section 8 was shotgunned out of the projects, so most neighborhoods have it.

6, what areas of the city are a no go as far as where to look? i have been looking at the summerlin, henderson and lone mountain areas
It is really neighborhood specific.

7, how is the town/state towards small business?
They just want their license fees. Other than that, they don't care about much.

8, how is the medical community/facilities
Mediocre places with some good docs. UCLA is a short drive.

9, anything you think to bring up that i am not thinking of?
Consider traffic and commutes. Not bad but that should be a decision in where you settle. No income tax. Don't go to the casinos. Don't hang out in bars.

1, any crazy gun laws or restrictions i have to look out for? Not really. Kind of weird hunting law about not having a long gun chambered in a vehicle... Can open carry but need permit for concealed
2, pocket knife laws? They are supposed to be under 3.5 inches if concealed. That would probably be a tacked on charge if you pissed someone off and had some hookers and blow or something...
3, how is the motor vehicle inspection (i have a modded car, cats still on but they are 100 cell race cats). is there any inspection for motorcycles. I think they just verify the vin and maybe odometer and you have to get it smogged.
4, this may be silly but what new critters and crawlers am i going to encounter? black widows are everywhere. you gotta look a little bit to find rattlers tarantulas and scorpions but they are around. So are gila monsters and coyotes. the yotes and black widows are probably the most likely thing you'll encounter
5, how is crime? personal and property? for a large urban area not bad, property crimes especially vehicles tend to be more frequent than personal crimes.
6, what areas of the city are a no go as far as where to look? i have been looking at the summerlin, henderson and lone mountain areas
I'd kind of stay away from north las vegas. it's evident pretty quickly if you visit a neighborhood. You shouldn't have too much trouble in any of those.
7, how is the town/state towards small business? Henderson has a lot cheaper business licenses than vegas but neither are really that bad
8, how is the medical community/facilities? I rarely if ever go to the doctor but we have a nice new hospital in henderson.
9, anything you think to bring up that i am not thinking of? It's fucking hot. as much as you dislike cold jersey winter you'll avoid the heat here and get cabin fever in the summer just as bad. I kind of recomend most people rent when they first get here and check out the different areas and see what they like to do for a while first. Yeah the schools, nv is typically ranked 50th of the states for schools.
I want to move to tn or nc or something personally.

This is only for Summerlin or the nicer parts of Henderson.

1- no
2- 3 inch max
3- easy- 5 minutes, but yes, there is an annual inspection. Find a "friend." and you're good to go. Lots of places like that.
4- Scorpions mainly. Summer time thing, and we don't have anything venomous, but they're still creepy.
5- Normal to low for any large city. Depends on area, but we have castle doctrine in the constitution and no possibility for retribution in a civil suite, etc. if deadly force is used. One of the best constitutional gun states, though we don't have CCW without a permit. Open carry is no permit.
6-North Vegas at night.
7- Excellent for business. Probably one of the best in the Nation.
8- Medical is pretty meh. The facitlities are great, but there aren't a lot.
9- Property taxes are maxed out at around 4200/year. BUT you have to file correctly, also file homestead. Car taxes are the part of NV that are insane. Expect to pay at least $500 per car per year.

Ive never heard of this. Is it only when you purchase one or is it like a luxury tax?

Taxes that they add into your registration.  The older the vehicle the less the taxes are.  A new vehicle registration can go over 500 a year depending on the vehicles value.

I remember when a reg was 35 or 40 bucks.

And it still can be if you drive an old 82 Toyota celica beater.

Easily over $1000 these days. I already paid taxes when I bought the thing...and I guess I can keep paying them every year like a good British citizen. Time to dump the tea in the harbor.

When I moved down here they wanted close to $2k for my Excursion if I remember correctly. I walked out. The lady at DMV didn't understand why I was confused because she insisted it wasn't a tax after telling me it was based on the value of my vehicle.

I just cowboy'd it until I got pulled over and the cop told me he could write me but didn't want to and then he asked me how quickly I would change it if he let me go and I told him I would do it that weekend and did. I did the math at one point with the best info I could find and I saved probably $3-$4k. In Alaska at the time it was something like $125 for two years regardless of the model and value.

Yeah. “Not a tax.”  Bullshit. That’s why I can itemize it on my schedule A right? The IRS says it’s a tax and I can deduct it.

I was shocked when I moved here from NY. Even in that filthy  crap hole of a tax crazed commie empire, it was $35 a year to register a vehicle. Any vehicle. A few $$ more if you wanted vanity plates. None of this value based recurring tax bs.

Several people were surprised I didn't register and warned me the fine was substantial. When I asked what the fine was they said they thought it was up to $1500 I laughed and told them I'd take the chance.

Plop it into a trust or LLC and there really isn't a way to say the registered owner is a "resident of the state".

Or pick a cheaper county and register it there.

As a native of Clark county for half a century I would not move here if you have kids in school. Nevada is almost last in the nation for education.
We have a good amount of crime in all areas of the valley. Some better than others

Not to mention that diversityequity has replaced education by state standards.

One day I might mess with that but I went ahead and went legit once I sold the house back in Alaska and switched my drivers license so I could buy guns.

Might want to check the definition of NATIVE. Assuming you moved to Nevada.
