CPR and Stop The Bleed class begins at 0900.  Be there by 0845 for sign up.  Bring $25 cash for the certification fee.  Attendees will receive a Stop The Bleed trauma kit.

This is a combination CPR and Stop The Bleed class.

This is a requirement  for Pioneer Candidate 1st class.

Stop The Bleed teaches how to save a life before someone bleeds out:

(1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound
(2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding
(3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet.

These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life.

Medical class location
First Baptist Church of Mound Valley.
400 Hickory
Mound Valley, KS 67354
Metal building on the west side of the church
Directions

There are no restaurants in Mound Valley so we will be BRINGING A SACK LUNCH
to eat after the class.

The hike is at Big Hill Lake.  We'll park at the south trailhead of the Ruth Nixon Memorial Trail

There's a single seater flush toilet as well as running water to fill bottles if needed.  Water quality is not the best so I'd suggest filling up at home that morning instead.

Please leave the rifles at home.  The area is extremely conservative and pro gun but a group of men patrolling the trails like an infantry squad is not going to win us any converts.

Here are direct map links to the trailhead parking area.
Apple Maps

Google Maps

We'll hike the one mile long Ruth Nixon Memorial Trail then hop onto pavement for 1/3 mile before hitting the Big Hill Lake Equestrian Trail  Hiking is allowed on the equestrian trail.

We'll hike out approximately 1.8 miles on the equestrian trail before turning around and returning to our start point for 6 miles total.

Trails have some moderate ups and downs but the sections Lomshek walked were pretty tame.

The equestrian trail has some tall grass so you should wear full length pants and use bug spray to keep ticks off.

The weather report is for temps in the 70's to 80's and a chance of rain.  If we end up getting a lot of rain we'll probably skip the trails due to extreme muddy conditions and stick to the road.  Rain would turn the trails into a soupy mess because of the soil type.

Let me know if you can attend or if you have any questions.

@Notcalifornialegal

I'm thinking I'll make it if I leave early for a business trip.

It would make sense to bump up the mileage to 8 which would round out the Pioneer Candidate 1st class req's.

Is there anyone interested in doing an 8 mile ruck with me after this?

We've planned a 6 miler, but I may try 12 since I'm heading to the challenge at the end of the month.

I'd definitely join ya for an 8 miler.

Nice. Ill be at the Warfighter too.

Hey @lomshek, how about you? You coming down for this?  It would be awesome if ya did! With the Warfighter challenge coming up i would love to brush up with some of your expert rifle instruction .  From what I remember, alot of people struggled with the distances and having to shoot from multiple positions.

Be glad to have you!  I’m afraid we don’t have anywhere to do some shooting but I’ll be there for the hike!

If I’m handling the 6 miles OK I’d be up for adding 2 more miles for our 8 mile requirement.

Not everyone in our group of 8 hikers or so will be up for an 8 miler but if we can do the 6 and drop the gang off then still have 3 minimum I’d be up for 2 more miles if I’m not dying.

I think out of the Kansas gang Notcalifornialegal and I are the only ones who have completed all the 3rd class requirements.

This hike will add one or two others to the 3rd class ranks!

Is the spec still 20 minute miles or are we expected to knock out 8 miles in less than 2 hours.  I’m doubting my ability to hold 4mph for two hours unless it’s all downhill!

Warfighter is a no go for me this year but next year might be a lot better.  Too many irons in the fire and work to make it happen this year.

@Ben

As we move beyond the 6 mile distances I wanted to verify the speed requirement.

Does the pace remain the same 20 minutes per mile as the mileage bumps up or do we need to increase our speed and do the 8 mile hike in 2 hours or less?

On the last 6 mile hike I was able to do about a 17 minute mile pace (not too shabby for 52) but 15 minutes per mile for 8 miles is gonna be a bit much just yet.

The pace remains unchanged. 20 min per mile is passing.

Of course.

Now...that said, your ultimate goal should be 15 minutes per mile. There might be a special reward eventually for managing a certain rifle qual, hike time, and PT test, among other things, in the same weekend.

It’s definitely doable.  I’m dropping 2-3 pounds a week most weeks and regaining long lost cardio and strength.

I imagine just losing the final extra 50 pounds of marshmallow will change that dramatically.

There is a microwave oven on site at the medical class if you want to bring something to nuke before the hike.

@Lurk-king

The CPR certification was what we were getting.  Stop the Bleed doesn't have a certification system, it's just a class for learning but they don't track or certify graduates.

If you didn't get a CPR card and paid for it LMK and I'll put you and the instructor in touch to get it fixed.

If you didn't pay but want/need the certification we can arrange payment to the instructor and get things squared away.
