Sightings of something like a cougar.
First a guy saw it while weed whacking. https://www.khon2.com/local-news/mysterious-wildcat-sighting-reported-in-hawaii/ Then staff and guests at a hotel saw it and got it on camera. https://www.khon2.com/local-news/security-footage-shows-apparent-big-island-wildcat/ My theory is either it is a species that has been evolving all along on Hawaii, or feral cats have reverted back to their wild genetics and started getting big like a cougar. |

If true, I suspect it is an escaped exotic pet instead of the two options you mentioned.

Now it looks like about 5 sightings. Read the comments on this video. People are saying they've known about big cats since the 80s.

I still think it is a one off or a mistaken identity until I see better evidence.
