This may be best pointed toward Sumter guys, probably even @ErikS who is quite knowledgeable about Shaw activities.
I was doing some work right off the end of the runway south of 76/378 and I saw a couple planes that did not appear to be F-16s. Maybe I was looking at them at an odd angle, but I did not see the distinctive engine cowling under the cockpit. They had a little different look is about all I can describe. Are there some other type planes doing exercises at Shaw. I really love that “noise”!! Saw several groups of 5 or so F-16s. |

Hard to say.
We have different aircraft in and out all the time. F35s are here on occasion, even Harriers show up and they don't have in the intake on the bottom of the jet like the Viper. LOL, might have the answer for you but need more information like the number of tails, wing height and aircraft color. Did you catch the great looking 55th jet with the blue and white checker board on the tail and ventral fins? It looks very WWII looking. The jets are all getting a new all grey paint that is pretty crazy to see after all my years at looking at the two tone paint scheme. What work were you doing? The new stop strip install? Hit me up with a PM next time you are here, we can grab lunch. I may even show you around if time permits. |

You've met me at the meet up a couple years ago. I think the last time we met at Pawley's. I sat across the table from you. I was the "uncool" guy. It is my method of blending in! I work in real estate. I am in and out of Sumter County regularly. Anymore I just try not to schedule around lunch because so may places wont let you eat inside. I am always on the run and tough to pin down We really need to get with d16 about having another get together!! Back to the planes. I was off Mayfield Rd. They were so low still that I could barely see them in level flight, but I saw them from the side and did not see the belly bump under the F-16. Looked thicker than F16. I saw them only from the side so I didn't notice multiple tails. Then, they went behind a patch of trees, took a hard 45+ degree turn right and up almost vertical toward the sun. Saw it as if I was above it. Fuselage got fat behind the cockpit, then the wings. Wings and tail blended together and I couldnt see the outline of the tail fins. Definite rumble to the thrust |

Can't wait until the next Shawfest if this Covid crap don't put a halt to anything fun |

I was gonna guess 35's.
But, I struggle to identify aircraft that use the engines built by the company that recently littered in Denver. |

Well, this is ARFCOM where we are all married to supermodels.
When I was a kid, we would ride our bicycles way farther than our parents knew to watch A-10s and F-4s from the barbed wire fence outside of the range. As an adult, I’ll still stop or slow down to see planes low and slow around town. |

Thanks Erik and others.
What you guys do is pretty cool to have done or even made a career out of. Thanks for including me in the "shop talk". Due to my work, I have met so many guys/gals from the base from both AF/Army/Civilian. It has always been a good experience for me when working with military people even though I still couldn't tell you what TDY(and many other acronyms) means. |

We will be having an open house again as soon as this rona shit calms down.
I will offer to the local folks myself as a tour guide. I am heavily involved in the event as part of my job. We will do an ARFCOM meetup here with me as your host. Folks with base access should stay in touch with me. Ya never can tell what I can arrange on slower work days. |

Count me and my family in.
I have had a great time at previous Shaw fest. At the last one, I managed to find myself right in front of where the planes briefly stopped after performing on their way to parking. That was great. During the low flyovers and conside ring how bad my tinnitus is, it is great when I feel the noise as much as hear it!! |

I ran the munitions storage area there in 1986. 94-00 I was also at Luke, 1993-2001. 63rd, then went across the ramp to shut down the 550th and 461st. I was in the 56th TTW at MacDill, then the 58th TTW at Luke. The 58th TTW shared the base with the 405th TTW, this was in 1986-1987. The 58th EMS had sole responsibility for the munitions storage area, we supported both wings. It is my understanding the 56th was the last man standing, after both the 58th and 405th were deactivated. edit: after posting the above I got curious and read the wiki article on Luke. Man, you need a scorecard to keep track of all the Wing and squadron changes during the late 80's to mid 90's. Also, the Wiki mentioned the munitions storage area being located outside the main base perimeter, but i never heard that mentioned in my time there. It was all inside the base fence as far as I remember. |

[#29]
I have to admit, I didn't really pay much attention to the changes as they were happening. Where the planes were going, why they were shutting down the squadrons.....I figured it was just the normal chaos of the Clinton era USAF. Hell, my tech school, first, and second bases were shut down and closed entirely during the same time. (Chanute, Bitburg, and King Salmon)
I worked the F-15s at the 461st--minimal flying during the shut down phase and we were just fixing delayed discrepancies and doing routine scheduled maintenance. If you remember, flightline operations were normally staffed at about 80-85% during the Clinton years. As the jets left one by one, we wound up with more troops than we needed, and we were working 2 on, 2 off....it was like a vacation. When we got down to the last 2 hangar queens, we still had about 65% of our initial staff and then the 550th absorbed the 461st.....so we had something like 150% manning for a full squadron and life got even easier as those planes left. I was getting bored, just sitting around so I requested a transfer back to the 63rd. |

Im on some type of flight pattern for multiple units. I have a great video of F15s coming over my house at less than 1000ft. That happens once or twice a month at least. I get the F16s doing flights at probably 3 to 5000k. Apaches that do low level a mile or two from the house. Transport helicopters at high level
Still havent figured out if the F15s are from Seymour or Atlanta. |
