Places to live to commute to downtown PHX?

If I were to have to commute to just a few blocks West of downtown PHX what would be some of the better suburbs to live in as far as commute time, maybe affordable homes and decent neighborhoods?  Tolleson, Goodyear, or more Northerly?

The 10 is a parking lot going to and from the west valley most times, and a nightmare during rush hour.
