To: All CSSA members
From: John Seville, President
Topic: USFS Integrated Management of Target Shooting on the Pike NF
Threat: This project could result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of acres currently available for dispersed shooting on the "promise" that they would build as few as three ranges to provide the same access to shooting.
Call To Action: Educate yourself using the project link below and post your position(s) no later than February 22, 2021
For Additional Information and to Post Comments:
https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=57807[This Executive Memo was adapted from a briefing by Bruce Arrant.] The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has initiated a project to revise its recreational shooting policy and management on the Pike National Forest. It may limit or eliminate dispersed shooting throughout the Pike National Forest (PNF) to protect natural resources and reduce irresponsible shooting risk. There is also a proposal to create formalized shooting ranges throughout the PNF. The USFS currently is anticipating approving at least three formalized shooting ranges, one per Ranger District (there are three Ranger Districts on the PNF). There are seven potential range locations and conceptual range designs for each area.
There is a public comment period open from January 6 through February 22. You must submit substantive comments no later than February 22. The official project website has all the project details and the portal through which you may submit comments. The website is https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=57807. Please feel free to make any comments you wish. These could include thoughts on the reduction of dispersed shooting opportunities, preferences on proposed range locations, suggestions of other range locations, pick on the number of ranges to be approved, management of ranges, range design or types of shooting accommodated, recommendations for balancing recreational shooting with other recreational uses on the national forest, recommendations to address safety concerns, suggestions on how to manage better natural resources related to recreational shooting, etc.
Bruce Arrant and Friends of Kelsey Creek NFSR 528G (528G.org) asks all the members of the CSSA to request that dispersed shooting remain open and that they approve building the other six proposed ranges (not three).
