I agree with your point but ... I don't see my fellow Americans as my "enemy." They are my opponents in the political arena; they are deluded, angry, and misguided; they believe in all sorts of stupid stuff that isn't true; they don't know enough about the subject matter to know what they want but they want it anyway; they want to control me and how I live my life based on their lies; and their notions of freedom and duty are not aligned with my own in any way, shape, or form ... but I'd lay my life down for every one of them.

If being an American doesn't mean anything to other Americans, then it means nothing to no one.
