Stick to the surrounding communities, if you can. There are decent spots in the central areas, but hit or miss.
- Derby (South)
- Goddard (West)
- Maize (NW)
- Bel Aire (NE) - we lived there for 4 years and loved it. Felt removed from the busy life, but 3 mins and you're right where everything is.
- Andover (East)
I'm certainly a bit biased to the NE side of Wichita, but I feel like there's still a lot of room out that way. Not too congested, yet getting all kinds of good places to shop and eat. Cabelas, Academy, REI, Texas Roadhouse, and more and more. We looked at Maize, which also has a LOT of great shopping and restaurants, but man, it always feels like a complete madhouse in that area. Another thing as far as driving goes, Maize requires you to mostly drive surface streets to get out that way, unless you work your way over to K-96. The NE area has K-96 right off the main areas of interest, so it's pretty quick to get around. YMMV!
