PLEASE OPPOSE HB 4870
(Representative Robyn Gabel)
Mandates all sixth grade students of public, private, and parochial schools
to get HPV vaccines
Because HPV is not spread through coughing, sneezing or handshake, and it is an STD that can only be spread through sexual activity, parents should decide if their child receives such a controversial drug! Also, Since HPV is not contracted in school, why should student attendance in school be based on receiving the HPV vaccine?
No vaccine is completely safe. That is why the federal government indemnifies Merck for manufacturing Gardasil 9, the HPV vaccine under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act for injury or death claims that can occur. Since 2006, when Gardasil was approved for use, people have reported 523 deaths and 64,270 to the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System as of December 14, 2019.
One Illinois teenager, Christopher Bunch, received the Gardasil 9 vaccine on June 29, 2018. By August 10, his doctor had diagnosed him with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis. His neurologist believed that, given his medical history, this was caused by the vaccine. Christopher passed away on August 14, 2018. A decision that could have such severe consequences should be left up to the child’s parents.
The U.S. Supreme Court in numerous opinions from Meyer v. State of Nebraska (262 U.S. 390 – 1923) to Troxel Er Vir v. Granville (No. 99-138 -- 2000) have reaffirmed that the custody, care and nurture of the child reside first in the parents. Also, the Court has found parental rights to be protected in the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Illinois has long recognized that vaccines for minors that deal with diseases contracted solely through sexual activities should be approved by parents.
