DERRY SPECIAL ELECTION. With last week’s Democratic upset in Bedford in the rear view mirror, next up in this year’s series of special elections for open New Hampshire House seats will be a Republican primary scheduled for Oct. 19 in Derry.

The candidates are former state Rep. Thomas Cardon, Derry Republican Committee Vice Chair Jodi Nelson and Town Councilor Neil Wetherbee.

Nelson on Tuesday was endorsed by state Sen. Regina Birdsell, who represents Derry as part of Senate District 19. Birdsell said Nelson is the only candidate “who will stand up for our Republican principles.

The winner will take on the lone Democratic candidate, former state Rep. Mary Eisner, on Dec. 7 for the seat vacated by the resignation of Anne Copp.

In the interim, a special general election will be held Oct. 26 in Cheshire County District 9 between Republican Rita Mattson and Democrat Andrew Maneval. Mattson won a GOP primary Sept. 7.

The winner in October will succeed the late state Rep. Doug Ley. The district includes Dublin, Harrisville, Jaffrey and Roxbury.
