Just got February's monthly magazine and an article in it really caught my eye.
His name was John Lewis Barkley. What made the article so interesting was I went to school in the small town of Holden(MO) where he tried to enlist at the Post Office where the Postmaster doubled as the Army recruiter and turned down to serious stuttering. He overcame by using his brother's draft summons.
After the war lived on the family farm in Blairstown which is even closer to me. His name was never mentioned in the years I've lived here in the community.
It was said in article that JLB rivaled Sgt. Alvin York in his exploits on the battlefield and became one of the most decorated Americans to fight in the Great War.
He also made the Shawnee Mission, Ks park system a reality after he had moved to the KC area late in life.
He died in 1966. Well HERO, you're not forgotten anymore.
