Quote History Quoted:I have the same exact truck. 98 GMC Sierra Z71, black. Came with the new house. It just went over 151k miles. Windshield has about 6 cracks in it, not a single body panel isn't rusted and dented, if you close the door to hard the glove box door falls off (not just open, it falls off), you need to use a 2x4 to keep the driver's seat up, the right exhaust manifold is rusted through and is hanging down... You get the idea. Runs like a champ though. My son and I did the front brakes on it 3 weeks ago and cleaned some of the wiring up. Last week I used it to mow down a new path over trees and brush. I use it to drag the road grader and it's made 6 trips pulling an enclosed trailer on the interstate which is 150 miles each way. We call him Plow Mater. I registered and insured it but now it's not going to leave the land anymore other than to fill up with gas.
A/C doesn't work anymore.

Good trucks! I bought mine new on May 26th, 1998. Mine is a 3/4 ton, ext cab, long bed, 4X4 SLT. I installed a Knapheide steel work cap about 3 weeks after buying it, with the double rear doors option. It was my locksmith service vehicle until I bought a Ford E250 in 2010. The original tailgate was taken off 3 weeks after I brought it home and got the cap installed, and has been high & dry in my polebarn ever since.
Just had the entire braking system replaced within last 5,000 miles. New calipers, rotors, rubber hoses on front wheels, drums, rear shoes, wheel cylinders, and ALL the lines redone with SS. Everything but the master cylinder. Cost me $1600.
One thing you need to watch out for with the 5.7L Vortex engine, is the gasket on the intake manifold leaking coolant into the oil. Not a good place for it to go. OEM gaskets were a poor design, but replacements are now made of Stainless Steel and are very good. I had mine replaced right around 160,000 in about 2005, with another OEM (before the SS one was available) when it was leaking externally down side of block, leaving spots on garage floor. Had it done again at about 265,000 when it blew out and dumped the coolant into the oil... this new one is SS. I caught it within 3 miles of driving when it began to overheat due to loss of coolant, and shut it down, had it towed & oil drained same day, so no damage was done to bearings (so far, so good
). Keep an eye on coolant level. If it seems to be disappearing with no puddles or wet spots underneath, it could be leaking into the oil.
They also go through water pumps and fuel pumps regularly. I've had both those replaced twice. All the oil has leaked out of rear shocks, they need replacement. A/C quit working at about 250,000. It has leaks. If I recharge it, it works for about a month.
I hit deer with it 3 times, 2 were prior to bull-bar bumper, and did damage to nose. It's on its 3rd grill, 2nd hood, 3rd radiator. 3rd deer smack was after installing that H.D. bumper, nothing damaged that time except broken fog light on right side.
Used to be my woods truck after being the work truck for 12 years. Then in 2017, I bought an '04 Wrangler Rubicon with only 55,000 miles on it. That's now my "woods truck". I can turn it around on a 2 track trail in the woods... the GMC is loooong, and needs a parking lot to turn it around in.
I now use the GMC mostly for trailer pulling - duck hunt / fishing boat, and utility trailer with UTV. It has a 8500lb Superwinch on a receiver mount, and that front bumper has a 2" receiver in it. I have it wired with cables with plug-ins for the front, and I modified a pair of 25' 4 guage jumper cables to run power to it in rear receiver. Ladder racks are home made, used to haul treestands or a 10' Jon boat.
In the 25 years I've owned it, I can count on my 10 fingers how many overnights it was NOT parked in my pole barn. 2 nights when I went to Hayward for a weekend snowmobiling and trailered the sleds over there, and 5 more when it sat in the lot at the mechanic's waiting to get the brake work done. So body is still in pretty good condition for a '98 with almost 300,000 miles on WI roads. Other than gun deer seasons in WI & MI, I have not driven it much at all in snow/ice/salty roads since it "retired" from a working life. It sits in pole barn with battery maintainer, and I fire it up about once a month, idle it about 20 minutes and let it warm up. Interior is in excellant shape, no seat tears, carpet stains... I took good care of it. Rear seat has had a canvas "doggy" cover on it for my Labs since it's been my hunting truck. Windshield has about 5-6 tiny stone chips from gravel roads... not unexpected up here. Oil changes every 3,000 - 4000 miles, last 5 times or so with synthetic. Tranny flushed & filled every 100,000. One of these days, it will transform from "an old truck" into a "well preserved, one owner, classic"..
This was it last fall, by Rainbow Flowage, after a morning of duck hunting.
