Wife not feeling well and wanted some sparkling water.
Was on my way home so stopped and got (3) Canada Dry @ $0.99/ea.
After tax, it came to $3.34, which equates to 12.3%.
Didn't think about it until I was driving home and teaching my daughter about sales tax, coincidentally.

Did you factor in the bottle deposit ($0.05 per)?

Wait a minute. For you to have gotten screwed out of $0.02, that would mean they charged sales tax on the bottle deposit. Does the state do this? Tax what is, essentially, another tax?

ETA: I understand it's only $0.02 but it's the principle!

By my calculations it's 3 cents, or 1 percent per item.

Coincidentally that is exactly how much the charge is on prepared foods.

Trade-in high maintenance wife for one who does not need packaged, bubbly water.

Sales tax is a fractional number that rounds up on purchase of multiple items.   Thats where your 3 cents went

Went back to fill 2 gas cans (paid at pump)
Went in to grab wife some seltzers (alcoholic) and a 6 pack.
Lady rang it up and I went
Said 6 pack rang up $4 more than marked.
I pointed out error and said I get it for free (CT retail law)
She got all mad and kept saying "No, no, no".
I was polite, but didn't waver.

She said she wasn't going do my purchase and I had to wait 30min for the next shift to come in. I politely asked her to call  the manager. She did and he said he'd be right in. He arrived about 8min later and I went over what happened. I showed him my phone, while I googled "ct retail law", and let him read it. I walked out w/ a free 6 pack.

Yes, I could've just paid, but why? Cost me ~11min of my time, to get free beer

TL:DR I got a free 6 pack
