A man accused of shooting a gun in a home occupied by children was shot in the hand by a deputy when he appeared to attempt to commit suicide, Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said Thursday.

When Elkins put the gun to his own head in what appeared to be an attempt to take his own life, Mellinger said, a deputy with a scoped rifle shot Elkins once in the hand, causing him to drop the gun.
