There is no BLM land on the East Coast.  Too densly populated and polulated for way too long.  They can get away with it in the desert as the population density is much lower and there isn't much you can do with the desert land.

Best you can do is look for state forests (like Savage River State Forest or New Germany State Park), or there are usually camping spots in State Wildlife Management areas (like Warrior Mountain - though there is no kyacking there) just don't go during hunting season.

The other option is to drive out to the National Forests in VA or WV, those are probably the closest you'll come to BLM land east of the Mississippi.
