Wow what? Plenty of pro gun bills are introduced every year but like always go absolutely no where. The carrying in state parks has been proposed for YEARS and Democrats just laugh and ignore it.

The proposed SB154 is a lot more dangerous than it appears. As currently written, the 200 foot prohibited area could have a very adverse effect on gun owners, especially those who live adjacent to polling places or who travel in vicinity of polling places, which in some circumstances are located on major roadways or in locations where one or more additional streets could fall within the 200 foot zone, unbeknownst to a traveler. As currently written, tohe proposal could effectively prohibit some individuals whose residence is within 200 feet of a polling place from owning a handgun (e.g. if an individual does not have a permit to carry they would be unable to relocate a pistol or revolver to a location outside the 200' Zone. Additionally, if an individual so situated were to transfer away the pistol to comply with the 200 foot, they would be unable to get it back or obtain a replacement weapon unless they were to go through the time consuming and financially costly process of either obtaining a pistol/revolver eligibility certificate or permit to carry. There could also be an issue for individuals who owns legal assault weapons whose residence is within 200 feet of a polling place.

Talk about an overbroad bill. If passed as currently written, it would have the effect of prohibiting any non-hunting use of state lands that are broadly open to firearms hunting year round. It could also bar non-hunting use of other state lands for significant amounts of time. Though the spirit is nice, it could end up being not only negative for non-hunters but also would likely result in efforts to get popular  state forests closed off to hunters in order to them accessibly to larger constituencies again.

One of the great things about the current at-risk law in Connecticut is that it uses LE as a sort of gatekeeper, which prevents a lot (albeit not all) frivolous at risk orders from being effectuated. Even with LE and SAs being involved in the process, some of the published cases pertaining to at risk orders have dealt with the requisite level of threat and imminence needed to justify such a warrant (the lack of which as justifiably caused some to be thrown out).

Those individuals are already empowered to contact law enforcement to start the process (and additionally , depending on the circumstances, cause an arrest to be made or emergency evaluation to be started if they believe that the individual presents a risk to self or others.) Unfortunately many of them (including the professionals on that list) are hesitant to use the existing process, often because they don't understand their options.
