Can anyone tell me how taxes work if I purchase a new vehicle out of state?  Does the state I purchase from charge me their tax rate and pay it to AZ, do I pay the difference to AZ, or do I only pay the purchasing states taxes?

Not sure if it was done right in my instance, but I ordered a new vehicle from a NJ dealer and paid the 5.6% AZ sales tax. It was delivered to a AZ dealer 5 months later. About a month after taking possession, I was hit with 0.7% Maricopa County sales tax. I never paid the 1.25% local tax.

I’m a car dealer here in aZ

The process as it’s always been was the out of state dealer would not charge you sales tax and give you a permit to drive the vehicle back to your home state and then upon you registering in AZ you would pay the taxes.

Now there are ways to go abouts the other way to have the dealer pay and include in your loan(since new car taxes can be a lot) but you do have that option.

Depends on the dealer.  I’ve done it twice now, bought two cars in Colorado.  In 2013, I had to pay the tax when I went to register it at the MVD in a lump sum.

Bought my wife’s car last year, and they added the AZ sales tax on to the finance paperwork, along with registration fees (they miscalculated and actually paid for a 2 year registration).

Just talk to the dealer you deal with and they should be able to explain (and your paperwork should reflect the same).

I just bought a new truck in Texas from a Ford dealer.  The dealer said they would take care of title and plates with AZ, and my plates would show up in the mail.

I work overseas, so I left the country again.  Turns out, from what I can tell from over here, AZ has no record of my truck.... so I'll have to un-fuck it next time I'm home.

In theory, it would have worked nicely.
