My buddy is under the assumption that in Illinois you are not allowed to have an adjustable brace on a pistol. This isn’t true is it?

AFAIK, a pistol brace is a pistol brace here.   IANAL but never heard of such a thing. You're talking like an SB Tactical PDW on an AR, MP5,  or similar pistol?  No bills submitted that include brace language has been passed to the best of my knowledge or for that matter, iirc, even been assigned or gone through committee.

There are no restrictions on braces in Illinois beyond the normal requirements the ATF puts on them.
